Title: N(DIY)AD. It's done.
Post by: juansolo on November 05, 2012, 10:35:56 PM
Now done. Details here: http://juansolo.demon.co.uk/stompage/ampage.html

Martin has done a cracking job of the cab. Blonde and Oxblood won in the end. I decided to go with a separate head and cab to isolate it. Cab will happen later.

That looks fantastic! Are you happy with the end result or is there any tweaking to be done? Very impressive looking amp in any case.  8)

Chuffed with it. The only tweaking done was a little re-biasing to run 6L6s. Not going to do anything else.

I was umming and ahhing about dropping a reverb in there (a pedal based one) but in the end, it's easier just to plug a pedal in (in this it'd require an additional PSU adding to run it). If I was making one from scratch I'd probably drop one in anyhow as the one we use does a spookily good impression of a spring.

Do you use the Belton brick?

New much smaller brick yes. It's a very simple circuit which is based on the recommended schematics from Belton/Accutronics. Single knob. Does what it should simply and well.

Got one left for sale. Martin snagged the other.

Looks great John.  Long spring reverb or short (or both)?

He got the other single short one (we made two of them).

I've not seen the smaller bricks, where did you get yours from?

I bought one of the larger bricks, but haven't got around to using it yet.

I had a pedal with the older brick that developed a very strange (intermittent) sample-and-repeat problem that would only be fixed by killing the power to it, but I thought it sounded pretty good-- have been wanting to build a pedal with the new one.

Love those ampmaker bits-- have wanted a couple of their transformers for a while!

You can get them from a few places such as Banzai Music & musikding.

looks good.

as for reverb - i keep getting tempted to build a proper spring reverb unit.  came across these kits the other day that have me tempted

Das Musikding sell them but I suspect they don't carry them as stock as they take forever to get here. I've gone in on a group buy that should see me snag a couple of shorts. Possibly easiest/cheapest to get them direct from Accutronics. There's a gut-shot of mine on my site.

I've got an old big block BYOC and this is a much nicer sounding effect. It doesn't have some of the features of the BYOC and I don't think it needs them at all if all you want is a spring reverb effect.

Neither do anything particularly odd.

I have a Lee Jackson Mr Springy that uses what I guess is the larger brick - simple with just 1 knob - needs to be on a power supply not battery though - kills batteries too quickly

Yeah, they still eat batteries. No point in fitting them really.

Hoffman do (did anyway) a proper kit for the old 3-knob Fender reverb with a 6K6 driver valve (can easy sub in a 6V6).  Weber probably do one too - either of those is the way I'd go personally.

An Epi Valve Junior would make a great basis for an outboard valve spring reverb unit btw.

i know, looked at all the kits out there but they get pricey quickly, that one doesnt look great but it is at least priced reasonably and i am sure i can do neater than the pics

but the bitmo kit and epi junior head was another option
