Title: Birds or Moons?
Post by: TheyCallMeVolume on November 08, 2012, 06:39:08 PM
No, this is not a reference to the forum....

Which PRS inlay do you like better?

For a long time I thought birds were too blingy and I would only consider PRS guitars with moons.

Over time, the birds have grown on me..... but I still only like the older solid abalone (or paua) birds, I'm not keen on the newer "outline" ones.

Moons, always.

Doesn't bother me - as long as it was not Eriza Verde I would take either.

Birds though I do have 2 PRS'. One with birds and another with moons.

I personally think the birds can be a little "obnoxious" on some guitars, however when I think PRS I think bird inlays. I would probably not buy a PRS without the birds.

I like birds (in more than one way).

I always wanted to do a partial bids inlay on one of my guitars
They would only go up half the neck and the rest would just be scattered feathers and finally a plump cat sat washing a paw as the last inlay.

OK - a bit twisted but it appealed to me

Come on, that's like throwing PRS into a Gibson vs Fender argument!

One of the things I do like about the birds is that, because they're irregularly shaped, you don't have that problem of dots (or moons) sometimes being inlaid a bit off-centre.  I know it has no effect whatsoever on playability, but it really irritates me!

Nik Huber's dolphin inlays are nice.  Beautiful work, but on "overall impression" I don't think they work quite as well as PRS' birds.  Maybe because they're all basically the same shape rotated through different angles.

Sorry Philly ... really don't like it.   I suppose it's easy to touch up any paint dings ................. PDT_005

With Birds vs Moons, I've one of each - think I prefer the older birds to the newer ones.

Yes, made by Patrick Eggle for Maximum Guitars in The Hague. They now do a new MXG-run, I saw. Don't know if the quality will be on par with earlier series.

Some people just have no taste Philly.  If I get another PRS, it will probably be Eriza Verde.  I like the old bird inlays too.

Is there even such a beast?

Some would say the dragon is a mythical beast, but.....

Ah, I didn't realise that's what you meant. How many hours does it take to put that jigsaw together I wonder? There was one of those in PMT Birmingham for ages.... £25,000 if I remember correctly.

Yes there was one in Mansons Exeter.

I like both. Moons are a great take on standard dots, but PRS = birds to me. So probably have to plump for birds, but preferably the old or artist style rater than outline or dirt birds.

Ditry birds are a different conversation entirely

I think the moons are cool and a great idea, but unless you're right in front of the guitar, you can't see the moons, they just look like dots.

Ah, but that's the subtlety of it!  :)

After some recent sales, I no longer have any PRS guitars with birds.  So I guess I'm a moons man again.  I would still like something with the old-style birds though....

Moons, I think the birds look tacky and awful!
