anyone know where i could buy a guitar neck (preferably a baritone if its possible) in the UK? warmoth is the kind of thing im looking for but seeing as its just a neck i dont want to have to pay so much for shipping.
so does anyone know of any businesses/shops similar to warmoth in the UK that could get me a decent *LES PAUL* style neck? the les paul being the key part of that sentance- definately dont want a strat style neck at all.
-
www.axesrus.co.uk sell mightymite necks, I think they do some les paul ones.
-
yer ive just been on there- they do 1 and thats it... its £70 or so... doesnt look too bad actually but i was looking for somewhere with a bit more choice...?
-
Mighty Mite aren't really comparable with Warmoth in terms of quality. I spent ages doing the exact same thing you're doing before realising the only way I could get a decent neck that's not for an exact Strat replacement was to go outside the UK, to Warmoth.
-
oh fiddlesticks...
what about a custom built one from a luthier.... would that be cheaper than a warmoth one when taking shipping it to account..?
-
:D
thanks for that site.. good to know where to get stuff.. but do they build custom stuff?
-
dont think so....

My only concern about Warmoth is that every once in a while you hear a horror story - it's bound to happen with all companies from time to time, I guess - and my worry is if it happened to me, how would I go about returning it? That's really the only thing holding me back from getting involved with Warmoth - there really are times I wish I lived in the US. I guess I'm just a born worrier!
About Mighty Mite, how is the quality on them? The only thing I know is that a guy I knew online was getting one of their necks, but before it arrived the forum shut down so I've no idea how he got on.
There was a company called Loristra in the UK that made necks & bodies, but sadly they don't seem to be doing business anymore .
-
yer i share your worries about warmoth, and buying anything major from the U.S in general. also theres the initial shipping cost as well which is bad enough. my band mate bought this beautiful electro-acoustic from america for about £200 or so and ended up paying about £400+ because of shipping and tax.
doesnt look like i need a neck now though as i cant get my Melody maker copy built where i thought i was gonna get it done. out of interest, anyone know any places like feline that would do me a good body on its own, or maybe body+neck?
-
what about getting Feline to make one for you?
-
i thought about that, do they do necks or just complete guitars?
only thing about that is im not sure about the cost.... i pm's 'felineguitars' on here though, asking him about it, whats his name? - jonathan?
-
www.allparts.uk.com
you could try that

Feline are rediculoulsy expensive...they asked between 300-500 quid for a neck when I was looking.......the words off, Britain and rip came to mind

haha! well.... that might not be RIDICULOUSLY expensive.... depends what the spec was i spose.... but way too expensive for me anyway....

Our necks go from £250 upwards
Depends what specs/inlays etc you want in the neck
Certain woods may be more expensive.....
A lean back headstock LP type/ no binding/ simple inlays/ baritone would be about £300
Some may feel that £90-100 for a BKP pickup is a lot of money, when cheap impoted pickups can be had for a snip, or a secondhand other brand on ebay may be a cheaper option but quality costs money.
A bargain is a bargain true enough - and there is a high cost involved with running a business or making anything in the UK - even the cost of putting a band together and getting regular rehearsals /transporting gear all over the place is costly (which I am sure many of you already know)
-
True Jonathan. £250 upwards is a fair deal for your own custom neck. You're getting your choice of works, neck profile, frets, inlays and finish, not a standard neck that was made using a CNC machine. It would cost you pretty much the same (if not more) if you were to order from warmoth.
-
yer i spose £250 + sort of price is about right for a custom neck but i thought warmoth was a fair bit cheaper- (not including the shipping of course).

$339 thats about £180 isnt it? thats scalloped and birdseye n all.
-
like feline said guys quality costs and to be honest those mightymite necks aren't very good from what i've heard. a guy who i sort of know got one, he was really dissapointed with it.quite a cheap feel according to him.
-
yer when it comes to custom stuff i spose you get what you pay for.
-
i've considered getting a warmoth neck for my telecaster, i wanted flame maple. but i simply wasn't willing to pay the shipping and tax etc.the extras you have to pay are worth it i expect if you get what you want, if it turns out to be not such a good deal then you're gunna be pretty pissed.
-
yer exactly. if i had the cash id probably just go for the safer option and get a custom-made guitar/neck here in the UK.
-
I will state that the Warmoth necks are good and the Mighty Mite seem very good value for money ( I have one here that a customer has brought in)
However for a totally custom built to spec product we are very fairly priced
There is a lot of great of the shelf kit available but there is a certain satisfaction, having something just the way you want it rather than how someone else thinks it should be.
We also do a lot of customising work (Pimp my axe style) and basic upgrades like putting BKPs in and making existing axes much better
The UK is far from the cheapest place to make anything.
Workshop rent and rates alone are a bit scary ....it's the cost of living thing that we all face in the UK - especially in places like London

Good value there - do add to the cost:
shipping and insurance
9% import duty to the price including shipping
and 17.5% to that price
It may well STILL be great value even then!!
-
lol yer 'tis good value, but like you said youd get hit harrrrd by extra costs and then if you didnt like it youd be buggered. its a tough decision really- a big risk. but i have virtually no money at the moment anyway so thats a decision i dont have to worry about yet..
-
yea actually, even after all the tax and stuff thats a pretty good deal sambo.
another issue for me was whether it would be in good condition when it arrived, like a few people have said, there are a couple of horror stories floating about that really put me off.
i'd love to get a filine or a warmoth neck. i'd rather go for feline though.
