Title: Looking for new Slam DM pups
Post by: EffigyForgotten on November 12, 2012, 08:30:39 AM
Going to get another guitar soon and as the title says i'm looking for slam/brutal DM pickups :)

For those of you not familiar with this genre here's some bands with sounds i'm interested in...

You get the idea, I tune to multiple tunings but usually just stay in C#/Drop B and I was thinking a Ceramic Warpig would suit me perfectly but for the neck I want something a little different, I want to have a solo tone similar to Symphony X, (like the solo on the song iconolast) and cleans like on textures by Cynic.

And I should mention i'm either getting a PRS Torero or a BC Rich Terrence Hobbs/Warlock, both have mahogany bodies, maple neck thru necks and ebony fingerboards.

Thanks for the links, I hadn't heard Abominable Putridity before.

To me, for bands like them and Skinless and many others, always sounded a little more organic than some, so I'm not sure I'd recommend a ceramic magnet right off. They just don't have the same pick attack that a ceramic pickup can give, from what I remember when I had my C-Pig in my guitar it had a heavier pick attack than some of these tones. So you might consider an alnico if you want that smoother immediate attack.

I actually currently have my PRS with holy divers and I want more grind, and tighter bass without sounding to thin like an EMG 81.

Id say my favorite tones are Aborted's Goremageddon and Global Flatline.

If I understood Eric correctly in another thread then a Holydiver with more grind is the Aftermath (Eric, please correct me if I am wrong).

PS: Please excuse my ignorance but what does Slam DM mean - Slam Death Metal?

Yes, slam death metal. I like the balanced sound of the holy diver, and the amount of mids but it isn't tight or "grindy" enough. The neck pickup doesn't work to well for distorted leads either, sounds great clean but I rarely play on the clean channel, I want something more smooth/fluid like symphony x/dream theater.

Yes, slam death metal.

Thanks for the clarification.

The HD neck is indeed a very clean pickup. For more juice the Cold Sweat neck is a good choice, and it is being used with many of the contemporary bridge models. In my PRS Custom I use it together with a Holydiver in the bridge.
