Title: Which guitar?
Post by: CaffeineJunkie on February 23, 2006, 05:34:09 PM
Hi, I'm thinking of buying a new guitar soon, only i can't decide between buying a PRS 20th Anniversary Custom 24 and changing the pickups to BKs or buying the parts from America and building my own.  :?

Any opinions would be helpful

Cheers

With that kind of budget I'll ask a professional to build one for me with exactly what I want. My 2 cents...

i agree with hell hound completely.... if your looking for a guitar in that sort of price range then you might as well get exactly what you want by going custom...

I'd agree with the guys above-you could spec out a great guitar for the cost of a PRS and have BKP's specified.

The "bitsa" might be somewhat cheaper to build than buying a PRS Custom 24... Even throwing "the works" at it...

if you have that amount of cash to blow on a guitar:

(a) probably get a custom-build from a luthier, unless you'r deat set on a PRS and

(b) get a new amp to replace your avt first.

Great guitar through not so good amp still sounds not so good.

Decent guitar through great amp sounds great!

Get a decent guitar, and a decent amp. instead of just an AWESOME guitar.

^he already has a decent guitar, if he put good pickups into the PRS. EDIT: i mean his PRS tremonti SE, not the new one he's contemplating!

With that cash, he could get an awesome amp!

+1 on buying the parts and assembling one or having one built. Spending all that cash for a PRS only to pull the pickups out is a bit wasteful, even though it would sound better

IMO, buying a good PRS in the States isn't cheap, but probably needn't be a bad deal.  I mean, a brand new PRS can be a very nice guitar!

On the other hand, buying a good PRS in the UK is ferociously expensive. :( For that money in the UK, I'd get a custom from Feline -- though if I was confident in my abilities, it would be fun to DIY with Warmoth etc. parts.

Just FYI, I played a few PRS other day here in Texas. As a Gibson Les Paul owner I would have to say they have gone the way of Gibson abit. That is to say you have to play quite a few to get a "good" one.

Either a mock PRS Birds-in-Flight or something similar to the Three-fret dove he did: (apologies for the colour in the second one, sacrilege I know)

true, sounds good too, but would have looked a lot better without dots, although i say that everyday of my life
Title: Which guitar?
Post by: sambo on February 24, 2006, 07:56:41 PM
you dont like dot inlays? or is just on that guitar in particular? i think they look fine to be honest... obviously a nice custom inlay from that 'bob' would be great but theres nothing wrong with good ol' dots...
Title: Which guitar?
Post by: CaffeineJunkie on February 24, 2006, 07:59:23 PM
Nah, never liked the dots, not even on my own guitar. i think that they only suit the ES-335, which i'll probably be buying in the not too distant future.

Dammit, i'm never gonna get round to saving for this guitar.
