Title: Anyone local who and record and noodle fancy a play with a load of pedals?
Post by: juansolo on December 08, 2012, 09:15:26 AM
I have no way of recording and, quite honestly am not a decent enough player to want to, so have never pursued it. I do however make a lot of DIY pedals and people occasionally ask for demos of them to get an idea of what they can do. Is there anyone oop north who fancies say a day playing with a load of our pedals and can record us a few snippets of said recordage? Thinking we could pop over with a box full of the things and have a go.

Lol, would love to visit Florida... Sadly getting there with a car full of pedals might prove awkward ;)

Just really after a quick run through of what they do really. Could possibly kill two birds and we have a trip up to Hull with a bunch of stuff?

I'm just off J28 of M1 so not a million miles away.

I have a decent enough recording pre and some good mics so could get a decent approximation of what they sound like.

Thanks guys. We'll see if Marc and co want to go for it as they're most local to us and I need to mod one of Marc's pedals which I can probably do on-site.

by the way Juan.. I've usually rotated OD pedals on my board, but I've settled on the Klone as of last weekend. The others are good, but depend on the situation. That Klone always has a setting whatever my gear.

so I would love to hear those demos too!!

Happy to do a few in South Manchester if it helps.  I have an alright recording setup and also a zoom q3HD for youtube clips.
No worries if you're already sorted......

The Klon(e) is just one of those pedals that does (annoyingly) live up to the hype* It does exactly what you want an OD to, gives you more of what you already have. To date I've only met one person who didn't like it, vs loads who do.

*Though they're not worth anything like the amounts of money they change hands for and the amount of hype that surrounds it is silly.

What a superb idea to get some recordings of your pedals, John. The Klon(e) has indeed been over-hyped and that has let me to steer clear of it yet, but I'm becomming quite intrigued by it...

I was once like you...then I had a momemt of weakness and snatched one of the last Klon(e)s done.

Let me tell you something now: IT IS AMMAAAAAAAAAAZING!.

I really get the hype, cause it is true! Best OD I have heard, ever.
I currently own another great one, made for me by Toe-Knee, but the Klon(e) is something different. In comparison, the usable range of Toe-Knee one is smaller (less settings that sound great) and it imposes more character of itself on the tone. This is great for many things (like my LP type with AMs playing metal), but I also often feel that it does not fit. Still more versatile than most tubescreamer like things, but compare that to the Klon(e) and you get a whole nother thing.
The Klon(e) just gives you more, which sounds cheesy but is so true. It feels more like an angry cleanboost than a TS. I feel like I can use it for everything (and also nearly every setting) for great results (though sometimes the other one will still get better ones). It just does everything very well, while my other pedal is much more specific.

Twas rather excellent. Many thanks to Tom for his hospitality and fine noodlage. Likewise Matt and Marc who also came along and brought some toys too.

Apologies to Tom's neighbours and family for the din and disruption.

Next time I think we'll have to descend on Mr Clegg's ;)

Yep, I downloaded the software and normalized them. I think the main problem with some of the others was that we were running the amp quiet so the OD's just sound like boosts rather than pushing the amp into distortion. So I haven't posted those.

Excellent, good to see you guys.  I'll post a few photos when I get a chance.  If we have another meet up in Yorkshire I'll bring the camera and we can get a few of the valve ones really cranked.  You know a pedal has some output when the walls are shaking and it's going through a Princeton Reverb on 0.5!

Anyway, the kids and the cats ears have stopped ringing so it's all good!

I'm thinking next time I'll get something set up on my laptop, pre record a backing track then record some lead lines over with a selection of pedals.....

We'll definitely have to have another go. Cleggy has more space so if we can co-ordinate it for when his neighbours are out of town, it'll be stonking. Marc can bring the Orion and if Brow comes up, the Splawn ;)

The demo vids are great too - especially the Dipthonizer demo. It made me smile.

if Brow comes up, the Splawn ;)

If you want an amp for trying pedals through then the Splawn really isn't it; it seems to hate all but 2 OD pedals I've ever tried with it!

If you do want an amp for testing ODs then I can bring my old 70s Carlsbro 50-Top as it's an ideal pedal platform.

If you just want amps to mess with then I'll bring the Splawn and SLO, no probs  :D

To be fair I think the Splawn would be too much at Cleggy's. Awesome, awesome sounding thing. But so very loud.

When we do do it, it'll be worth bringing stuff that you want to try pedals through to see what they're like. It's more finding things that work with your amp rather than pedal friendly amps in some cases. Marcs Orion LOVES the Plexitone for example.
