Not promotion, BKP eats them for breakfast :) I'm just wondering when they became heavily used. Who were the first artists to use them? Was it ZZ top? Then a bunch of other guys followed suit?
-
I heard from EMG with Metallica, but don't think they were the first users...
-
David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler were early guitar users, but I think they may have started with bass pickups.
-
I also first heard about them through metallica
-
I think it was Metallica as well. Other guys had used them before but I think Metallica really got people going on EMGs and MesaBoogie.
-
Slayer were using EMGs from around '86 when they did Reign In Blood & Zack Wylde was using 'em on Ozzy's No Rest For The Wicked LP in '88/89.
-
They were the pickup of choice for most rock/metal bands in the mid 80's. Admittedly, a lot of them were hair metal bands, but most of the thrash bands of that era used them.

Hello to all, so my first post at BKP is about EMGs..........ok.... I know the EMG 81, 58, 60 were designed in 1979 (!) The 85 followed later on as replacement for the 58. In 1981 they were really popular yet..... so a little before Metallica, Slayer etc.

SRV had a at least one set in the early days - Fender keep that hush hush!
For active pickups, EMG rule.
