Title: Satch sound?
Post by: donovan.x on February 26, 2006, 08:08:17 PM
What would be the "Satriani" of BKPs?

Probably the mm

i'd have thought the holy diver, but that's based mainly on specs, rather than having tried it.

The MM would be way too hot, i'd have thoought...

The Nailbomb, its got a full midrange and alnico V mag. Very organic tone. Just right for satch tones.

^i was almost going to put in "or maybe even the nailbomb, if it's not too hot", but i didn't bother

of course, the fact that the nailbomb will do satch tones well is only increasing my GAS for a set. As you guys probably know, I change my mind daily (and frequently more often) over which BKP's I'd rather get.

Satch has always used quite low output pickops (Paf Pro) which he has matched with high gain amps and o/d pedals. I would have thought something like the mule would be a contender,it does everything else!

Based on the Fred pickup: cutting treble, good vocal mids, few bass, and mid-low output.
I did not try BKP pickups that would be very close to the Fred. But my Holy Diver bridge is not so far from the description I made above.
Sorry to put another competitor in you list...

:D + 1  for the Mule

Steves right Satch use`s a lower output P/U but turns the gain up on his amps + OD pedals. The Mules have cutting treble & a great balanced Mid to low range. Highly recommended.

Satch's pickups always seem to be 'hot-PAF' territory to me - I'd imagine the VHII would do the job.

haha nobody really knows do they? just admit it guys. I've gotta say i think a lot of the BKPs could pretty much nail a satch tone...

who says satch ctually HAS his own specific tone? sure, every one has their own tone to a certain degree but theres nothing amazing about satch's (that ive heard anyway) which sets him apart THAT much from everyone else.

+1  Nails the tone pretty close. Although if you want more power go for the Nailbomb, it's got the hot vintage tone too. It also never fails in Ibanez axes!  Higher DC pickups can mask some of the guitars natural tone but help out if your guitar lacks a bit of resonance.

LOL! yes... he does... but what makes him 'pwn'? his tone or his playing and style??? i mean if someone did a solo, and someone said "nice solo dude sounded like satch"- would you think they were talking about the tone or the playing? in my opinion it would be the playing because i think thats what hes well known for...

i'd say it's both- he's well known for legato playing etc., but he does have a very characteristic, vocal-mids kind of sound.

For me though, it's the sunglasses...

I think he looked better with hair - hes starting to look old lately. if he wasnt such a legend, i'd laff at him for the bald+oakleys look, haha

if i knew how to post pics, i'd post a pic of satch with hair to prove he looks cooler without hair.

Heck, who cares, here's a link or 2: http://www.satriani.com/2004/discography/Flying_In_A_Blue_Dream/Flying_In_A_Blue_Dream.jpg

1337 = LEET = elite. Don't ever talk "1337 speak", as it's known. And Sambo, that doesn't stop him being better at guitar than most.

The !11 bit is because newbies/noobs/|\| 00|35 often let go of the shift key when in a rush to exclamation mark everything. E.g. !!!!!!!1!!!!!!!11. 1337 speak only exists to make fun of incompetant forumites/games players.

  ok we need a new smiley on here- a cat hissing violently.... its the most aggressive action in the world as far as im concerned....and its the only picture that would come close to expressing my anger at the moment........

im going to refrain from continuing very far... but i will say this:

any guitar player who likes kelly clarksons music should have his gear burned to ashes because he/she is not worthy of the coveted title that is 'the guitarist'

P.S he/she could of course choose the alternative option of handing over their gear to head of the 'blasphemy punishment' department....
