Title: You chose for my LP
Post by: DavidPRS on January 10, 2013, 12:05:07 AM
Regardless of my style, I'd like to see what the masses think should go in my LP.

No hints of tones, bands or other guitarist?

Abraxas all the way. 8)

Only hint - no muddiness. Don't forget to vote.

Tough one - especially with no clues
As it has a maple neck too.
I'd rather like Cold Sweat for my own specific use , but I do love the Abraxas as a general great sounding workhorse - so that is what I voted for

If you don´t wanne give any info I am gonna have to go outside the vote and say Rebell Yells, THE les paul pup for me.

The HD and MM have never appealed to me much, so it's a straight choice between the other two.  Since there's a lot of maple involved, and I think the CS suits not-so-bright mahogany guitars, I'm voting Abraxas.

In that case I would say Mules, the ultimate 59 PAF-tone, but ok, let's stick to the four options.  :)

Voted abraxas for versatility.

As a general purpose pickup for a Les Paul you cannot go wrong with the Abraxas set (my vote). The bridge has more power than a vintage style pickup and is able to do 80s and some more modern stuff decently. The neck is clear enough for almost anything.

If you wanted more 80s feeling, Holydiver (on the warm side), Rebel Yell or Cold Sweat (on the brighter side) would do it. Want to go heavier - go Miracle Man.

Cheers Stephan

Mule woulda been my ideal selection here, but Abraxas is the best of the bunch listed.

Looks like its gonna be a landslide. Surprised there isn't any cold sweat takers, too hot maybe?

Well I guess these are just our opinions on a very blank question. If you want Cold Sweat, I'm sure you can find one! I sure wouldn't complain about getting any BKP!

Yeah I agree, seems that any BKP I consider has tons of people praising it weather it's a cold sweat or a stormy.. I guess I can't go wrong either way.

Well I hate the change gears here but after seeing the Abraxas get so many votes, I looked at some others that might be closer and a better matchup to the Abraxas.. So, how are the Mules in a bare knuckle fist fight against the Abraxas!

As I said in my first post in this thread, I would've chosen the Mule for your broad question over anything else.

So allstar, how different are the Mules from the Abraxas? Would you consider one hotter then the other? What are the sonic differences?

The Abraxas is basically a Mule on steroids, and is a bit more middy, the Mule with a bit brighter a tone. As I've said before here I'm a big fan of underpowered pickups being driven by a good amp, there's nothing that beats that and I feel like the Mule is basically the definition of that. It's an extremely versatile pickup, as the name implies (I'm guessing it wasn't a coincidence  8)) as well.

@Allstar - See I thought the Mule was the juiced up one of the two. Reading the description on the website it states the mule is good for "blues - metal" and the Abraxas says something like, blues - hard rock. Glad you said something cause I was under the impression that the Abraxas less powerful then the Mules.

Definitely not. That's why the Mule is in the vintage section, Abraxas in the vintage hot section.

I'm guessing the main reason the description for the Mule includes metal is because it really is a do-it-all pedal, and the Abraxas is too middy for most metal players as they typically scoop their mids.

Thanks buddy, the Mule is deff an intriguing pickup. I've seen many YouTube with the Mules but nothing where they crank up the gain. Just mostly bluesy jazzy riffs. I would love to here them opened up. I'm taking a flier on these Mules for sure.

There should be plenty of clips on the forum of all types of genres.

here's a quote from an interview:

Nolly: Do you have a personal favourite pickup?

Tim: I do, The Mule. Along with the Miracle Man it was one of the first I worked on and I personally find it suites the majority of what I play. It’s based on a late ’59 PAF humbucker so it’s no surprise to find it’s versatile and that the voice is totally classic. Having said that, it’s not like it’s the only pickup I use but if I can only grab one guitar to go out on a gig with it’d have Mules in it.

Mules perform very well with the gain cranked up.

Wonder how that poll woulda looked if it was just the Mules vs. the Abraxas! Probably a lot closer the 7 to 1
