greetings fellow guitar nerds. been working on an ep with my new outfit the sheltering sky. here's a rough mix of 2 tracks from our upcoming ep.
recorded by jay newman (serpentine path/ex-unearthly trance). guitar setup: axefx ultra / mesa boogie 2:90 (with ruby 6L6 and jj 6L6) / emperor 4x12 cab with weber 65 speakers. bernie rico jr 727 hesperian guitar with bareknuckle ceramic warpig pickup was used. mix sounds a bit dark but you get the idea. enjoy!

That is some heavy stuff.
Guitar sounds great! Sadly some presence is missing in mix, which means the guitars get a little in the background. As you wrote, it's a little dark mix, fix that and it will be killer!

thanks holmes!!! we definitely need to raise up the sm57 in the mix. we had a lot of high end bite going on in the room, so we need to better balance all 3 mics for the final product.

So I'm guessing that you are all playing the instruments live then?
If you are then you can't add any condenser mics, but if you are tracking I have found that a SMC or a big condenser can complement some freq the SM57 are missing. However a SM57 alone should do the job. Where are you placing the mic and how are you directing it?
I usually put a SM57 straight onto the edge of the center cone/dustcap. You should be able to find a nice sweet spot for the high end grit you are looking for.
This is my current setup. The SMC is just an addon, I try to get as good a sounds as I can get first with the SM57 alone before I add the SMC. I'm also hunting mids that cut through a mix.
