Title: New Amp/Cab/Pups
Post by: Hammerheart on January 18, 2013, 08:37:28 PM
New OR15 Head, New Jim Root Signature cab and new Aged Nickel Mules that arrived and got installed today. I bought the cab just after christmas to match the dark terror. Treated myself to the OR15 on wednesday. I fancied something more vintage sounding as the Mules were coming. It sounds mint although I may get another 2x12 with some more vintage sounding speakers later.

What speakers would you guys recommend for a stoner rock vibe with this setup if I were to get another cab at some point? I read somewhere greenbacks are the way to go.

The OR15H is like having the drivechannel of the Rockerverb under your fingertips. Great amp for the money. Congrats with this catch.

I was a little worried as to what the Jim Root 2x12 was going to be like with Orange's own brand speakers, but they sound great. I am very happy with my cab.

Yeah I know. I really love it. First amp I've ever got where I know I will not ever be parting with it.

Same. For the price its either this one or the open back orange ppc212. I demoed them both side by side in Andertons with a dark terror, a jim root terror and the OR15. I fell for the OR15 then, but I'd went in looking for a cab and I thought the Jim Root cab sounded better. Now I have the head as well its got me thinking that if the orange 'voice of the world' speakers sound as good as this, what do the other speakers in other people cabs sound like. This is my first cab with 12" speakers in it. The VOTW speakers are supposedly like a v30 but with a tighter bottom (chuckles).

I noticed there are two different versions of a greenback. There is a more expensive 'heritage' version. Anybody have any experience with them?

The TC electronic pedals I have there are worth a mention too (Overdrive/delay/reverb). Really great quality. Well pleased with them.

Cool rig!!  :D

With the greenbacks, I can imagine them working really well for stoner rock. I've not always liked greenbacks, they are great for blues, but I miss the big magnet tone and some definition under higher gain. As a result my personal favourite speakers are EV12L and sidewinders. I can very well imagine greenbacks being just the thing for stoner/doom though.

What are you doing posting online? I'd be too busy playing that beauty of a rig!

Cheers for all the great comments guys.

Another question... What impedance speakers do you find in Orange 2x12 and 4x12 cabs if the cab is rated at 16ohm.

Nice looking rig  :D

I haven't played these but the Eminence Swamp Thang might be good for stoner rock as they have a thick and smooth tone (if my memory serves me well - based on reading reviews) which I think will be good for stoner rock.

Different ones I guess, two 8 ohms in series in the 2x12 and four 16 ohms in the 4x12. I'm not an expert,  but I don't see a way you could get four 8 ohm speakers to add up to 16 ohm total impedance.

I'm just tryin to figure out if I buy a speaker to try out which impedance will give me better flexibility to add more and fill a cab. Im thinking 16ohm after looking at different wiring diagrams. A 16 will allow me to stick it in a 1x12 or a 4x12 cab later. I hope you guys don't mind me thinking out loud on here.
