Title: Another newb looking for pickups
Post by: Trevoire on February 27, 2006, 01:57:18 PM
Hi there everyone, I've been considering swapping the pickups in my guitars for a while now and am looking for people to give me ideas as to what would suit my needs.

I'm currently using a Ibanez SZ with a duncan designed jb in the bridge and a seymour duncan 59 in the neck. My amp's a marshall dsl50. My sound is something like a more modern Iron Maiden type tone. I'm looking for a more powerful version of the jb with a tighter bass thats still good clean, maybe with less of a honk in the midrange, for my neck I'm looking for an Iron Maiden type lead sound, the 59's pretty good but is maybe a little low on output, the problem I normally have with neck pickups is that they're normally far too bassy, the 59 seemed to rectify this but as i said, im wanting a little bit more output. Probably something with a nickel/chrome cover to make it sound quite smooth, but hot! I'm not wanting a crazy mega distortion style pickup that doesnt do decent cleans, just something with alot of power,

I'm also buying a new guitar soon, either a basswood bodied hardtail RG or something mahogany based, I'm looking to downtune that between Drop C and Drop A. Looking for a Bullet For My Valentine type sound from the bridge and for my neck pickup I'm looking for something that would handle the clean side of things so the cleans on the bridge arent quite as important.

I know I'm asking quite alot here, I'm just hoping there'll be very specific pickups that'll suit my needs and not a huge list, I'm awful at decision making! lol

Thanks in advance  :D

Welcome.

If the Ibie S series is a mahagony body, it's going to be a little hard to get an exact Maiden-styled tone.

I would recommend a VHII or Holy Diver set for the pups.

yeah, my bridge sound is like maiden but darker and heavier and i'm pretty happy with that, just basically wanting a jb with a tighter bottom end, maybe the nailbomb? seems about the right specs, alnico magnet and sitting about 16k. getting the neck pickup lead sound in a mahogany guitar is alot harder, maybe a basswood bodied guitar is the way forward? a bit darker than alder but not dark as mahogany, would probably suit my neck pickup tone better but sacrificing my bridge tone. why does everything always have to be a compromise

though i suppose it'd also help me cut through my band a bit more as the other guitar player uses a les paul into a crate, so something basswood into a marshall would really give me a different tone....

sorry just thinking out loud now

LOL!

Personally, I hate basswood. However, I will admit that I like a brighter tone, with plenty of attack. I'm able to get a GREAT early Maiden styled tone from my Strat (hard ash) with a HVII in the bridge.

Lemme dig up a clip for ya ...

This is a quick video I did on Saturday to transcribe a new riff.
If you have broadband, you can download the file, it's about 56 MB.

had a watch of that video, really like the riffs and the sound that you're getting outta that strat, though it aint really the sound for me, still probably worth buying a strat for one day though :D what u running it through? 5150?

Had a look on the site and i'm thinking a nailbomb for the bridge pickup, still not sure on a neck bucker though, i'm thiking something about 10k, hot paf style, not too bassy?

btw, why is it there's only one quoted dc resistance for each pickup? seymour duncan etc give 2 values, for bridge and for neck, is it just the bridge pickup thats quoted on the BKP site? if so then how can i figure out the rough ohmage of the neck version?

As far as a downtuned pickup goes i might get a warpig    suggestions on a clean pickup for neck position?

I second the VHII for Maiden. The new Alnico V Holy Diver might also be a good choise.

I can't get enough of that Splawn amp, Ben.

Tr00. I will be trying out the ole HD when Phil gets his, and if I love it, I'm getting one for my M1. If not, I'm going with the Crawler ... BUT, that's another story. ;)
