Title: Cabronita build
Post by: WezV on January 22, 2013, 05:20:05 PM
just an assembly job on this one.   Its one of those where the finish didn't quite go right, it crazed quite badly... but it made more sense to go with it than re-do and I am quite happy thats the decision we made

I really love that. Personally, on a guitar like that, the checked finish works well. It feels like a blunt instrument for serious work rawk. Very very cool indeed.

I agree with Andrew- I think it all works well.

Like that, looks genuinely old rather than a relic.

Nice relic job, even if it was unintentional!

What are those super-knurly knobs, Callahams like the bridge/saddles?

Oh my, that is nice. The botched finish goes well with the Tv Jones. Looks fitting.

i think i will stick with philly's "unintentional" rather than Kiichi's "botched".

the original plan was a thin skin hand buffed nitro finish, so we were never aiming for perfect mirror finish.  The checking gave us the option of redoing it (taking many months given the season), leaving as is - new but checked.   or doing a bit of relicing to tie it all together

everything past this point (the new but checked stage) was completely intentional:

Yes, "botched" is the wrong word, I apologize, it was too late. I would call it one of those perfect imperfections.

How does the buyer like it?

he seems to like the way its gone.  obviously when the finish crazed i offered him some options on how to proceed along with estimated prices and timescales.  time is an important factor on this, which is probably why it crazed in the first place.

i sent him some pics last week and he was happy with the level of wear but wanted it a bit shinier.  it was a good call as too often relicers go for the matte finish....  looking at my 30's reso and 50's archtop both have finishes just like this, still shiny in between the age.

so we went this way, its looking bloody good and its come out cheaper than originally quoted.

My ultimate GAS is for a cabronita guitar!! What are the best filtertron pickups?

Well its Tv jones all the way, even gretsch know that and use them on all the high end guitars.   This has a classic and classic plus, but they have more options these days.   The classic is the closest to the traditional filtertron, but the classic plus is much more versatile whilst still being gretschy.

When Tv jones started they used the filtertron name, I had a filtertron + which is now called the classic plus.  oddly, now he works a lot closer with gretsch, they no longer use the filtertron name

There's a Powertron Plus in the TV Master if you fancy a compare and contrast ;)

It's a Cornell Romany Plus on the lowest (0.125W) power setting for the whole thing. There may well be a TS 808 in there as well.

I'm finding this all very confusing ;)

Just to be clear: is it a normal PowerTron in the video you posted of the White TV Master?

Also: is Wez's lovely Cabronita for you, Juansolo, or neither of you?

Clarity is a wonderful thing. My pickup, in the white TV Master, is a regular PowerTron, not a PowerTron Plus.

Wez's lovely Cabronita is, sadly, not for me.

Thanks for clearing that up Andrew :)

I think Gretsch pickups sound fantastic. But its hard to know how to work the Gretsch look into something I feel I can pull off on stage. They aren't exactly stripped down and metal, though they are nice looking in their own way. Perhaps I like the Billy Bo and also the rectangular ones best.

I may (eventually) put TV Jones' in something - but there again, it needs the right look of the guitar to have them looking good. I know TV Jones do humbucker versions, but a look/project isn't obvious. I have a Gordon Smith V that could be a candidate, but not sure the pickups would seem right in that axe.

I'm putting a set in a '72 Thinline Tele.

Well, when I say "I'm putting", I mean that in a theoretical sense, obviously.

Going back to Wez's Cabronita build.. I think it would look even more awesome in that deep Gretsch orange colour with a black pickguard.

 :o

That's so cool!

Is that an actual Fender custom shop guitar?  Makes sense, since (I think) they own Gretsch nowadays don't they?

I love that orange colour.  I have (here we go again.... ) a Tele body in sunset orange, but it's not the one which is getting the TV Jones pickups.

(Sorry, that's it, I haven't got any more never-to-materialise Tele projects to go on about now.  )

Yup, was a toss up between the two as BFG uses both. Decided to try the slightly hotter one.
