Title: HSS Strat "Suhr wiring" help needed
Post by: xXNicFlairXx on January 29, 2013, 05:33:32 PM
Hi folks, i am in the final stages of my HSS Strat build and after a bit of research i think the "Suhr HSS" wiring is what i'm looking for. i don't want push/pulls or extra switches, all i want to achieve is the right pickups seeing the right value pots and caps. i have a limited knowledge of these things so i need a little advice. i will probably get a tech to do the wiring as anything beyond standard strat wiring is beyond me and the super switch looks a little confusing. looking at the diagram it looks like it also has a treble bleed mod, i have tried this before and did not like it so will not be using it. my main questions are do i need a 2-wire or 4-wire humbucker? and am i correct in thinking that the rating on the resistors is 470k?
Any help, advice or feedback would be much apreiciated. cheers fellas!

Yes, it consists of R1 and C1. If you don't want it, just leave these two components out.

Definitely a 4-wire humbucker because you need to wire the white/red (white/green with the BKP wiring color code) to the switch. This connection is needed to split the humbucker in the appropriate positions.

Yes, you are correct. The 470k is put in parallel in all combinations that do not use both coils of the humbucker in order to get a load of the 500k volume pot in parallel to the 470k = approx. 235k, which is close to the 250k load which is regularly used for single coils.

Cheers Stephan

Looks like a good wiring scheme!

I do struggle with those schematic-style diagrams though, I wish they'd just draw it to look like the actual components (more like the diagrams on the BKP and Seymour Duncan sites!)

one more thing before i start ordering parts. should i order my middle pickup RWRP? i usually have this on strats, just want to know if it will work with this wiring.
the other thing, i was looking at buying resistors and i know i need 470k but there seems to be different wattage available, 1/2w and 1/4w. which type do i need or does it not matter?
Cheers!

RWRP should work with this wiring.

1/4 w is enough for the resistors. For guitar wirings there are no power dissipation requirements to be observed. Lower wattage resistors have the advantage of smaller size.
