Title: NGD: An oldie but goodie...
Post by: Twinfan on February 07, 2013, 03:21:10 PM
Well, not that old!

I wasn't planning on buying a guitar, but then this came up for sale and I'm weak.  My PRS Signature Limited wasn't selling, so I traded it in today for another 2006 Brazilian Rosewood Modern Eagle - with a trem this time.  I wasn't going to buy another ME unless my Holy Grail of one in Emerald Green appeared in the UK, but it appears that not a single example ever made it here.  This one will have to do as a substitute  ;)

May I introduce "Norma Jeane".  Not a bad looker it has to be said...

As a colour comparison, here she is with "Billie Jean" who I've owned from new.  Quite a difference in colour!

Very pretty indeed. Beautiful guitar. Her sister's not bad looking either. :)

You can be as nerdy as you want, matey!

Here are the backs and necks...

absolutely gorgeous mate! definitely as nice as the fronts, in their own way. i'd love a rosewood necked guitar, was impressed when I tried yours

These two are better than the one you tried, but to be fair that one was pretty decent  ;)

They're a different beast, especially with the stock pickups.  Like a Tele on steroids...

I knew we'd get a TF-NGD

But sound reasoning, very sound :D

Looks FAB, I actually prefer the look of these to the ones in your avatar (scrummy as they are). And, I have to admit, the colour of this one just shades the blue one for me... In fact, my advice, if it didn't have a trem, would be "bin that old one - looks tat beside it..."

So how do they compare playing?
Title: Re: NGD: An oldie but goodie...

The neck on the trem is a touch rougher, unlike the stoptail which is like silk.  The stoptail's neck feels a touch larger too.  I need to do a setup tweak on the trem as the action is a bit too low for me, and the bridge isn't floating as I like.  I'll sort that out in a bit, won't take long to do.

Tonally, the trem is a touch more open and bright although it does have fresh strings.  Very similar ballpark though, not a huge amount in it, which is good as I like the tone of the stoptail!

ooo very nice :)

are they meant to be the same colour? that's sorta what your post implied but i might just have read it wrong (which is fairly likely since the first time i read it i thought you said this one was emerald green   )

That's a fantastic top with a heavenly colour. Sort of jealous....  :)

Yep, they're both Faded Blue Jean but the trem model has faded a bit, plus the maple is a bit yellower giving it a green tinge.

It's gorgeous in the flesh...

Nice one Dave - the original ME is still my favourite guitar of yours though!

The original ME is a cracker, and the tone is more Fender-like so it's right up your street.  I love playing all of my PRS guitars, and I've got to the point where I don't really have an overall favourite any more - just a favourite for that day/mood.  I'm grateful that I'm fortunate to be able to have them.  They're like my kids now, I don't think I could bear to see any go!

It's Rainforest mate, and you missed the Smoked McCarty Burst singlecut  ;)

You'll have to bob up for a test drive sometime with your fine ME example!

This is one of those pesky threads where I couldn't see the pictures in work, so I had to be patient....

Nice, very nice!  :D

It's fascinating how different the colours are.  Rather like faded blue jeans, in fact.

That's an interesting point.  I think there are certain guitars, or certain models of guitars, which just feel completely "right" and you can't imagine ever getting rid of them.  Whereas others just come and go.... and often you know, deep down, which category a guitar falls into even in the excitement of having just bought it.  Maybe those feelings change over time though, I don't know.

I tried, I really really did.  I wanted to stop, and had the Signature Limited sold I wouldn't have bought another.  Nothing of any value is selling right now though, so I may as well have the cash stored in something that's better for me.

They're all unique, much like the old 'bursts...

Some of mine over the years have been growers Phil, but the "right from the off" guitars seem to be the ones that have stuck around for me.  Mostly that's a PRS McCarty shape in a nitro finish - which are 5 of my 8 keepers.  As an aside, all bar one of my guitars are nitro finished so something in the feel really appeals to me.

Yeah, there is definitely much to be said for a nitro finish.  The debate about whether or not it affects tone has been done to death, but perhaps it's the way it actually feels that's the key.

I think it is Phil.  I just prefer the feel of it, it just seems more natural in some way.

Utterly utterly stunning! Big congrats, that one is just perfect! Beautiful colour and a trem, that's a perfects ME.

So this is a secondhand then and not part of the NOS MEs?

Lovely guitar Dave.  I seem to recall saying that once or twice before :)  I've always loved your original ME, but the colour in that one is fantastic.

Thanks Blue!

So this is a secondhand then and not part of the NOS MEs?

Correct - it's secondhand, bought here in the UK.  The NOS MEs released recently were only available in the US.  It's virtually impossible to get Brazilian Rosewood into (and even around) Europe now without a truckload of paperwork.  The only person who seems to be able to do it is Nick Huber, but I believe he's very organised with his mountains of documents.

Does Huber use Brazilian rosewood as standard?  I'm no expert, but I'd say mine looks like it's pretty bog-standard Indian rosewood.

(Edit:  I just looked at the Krauster specs on the website, it is Indian, ignore the question!  He must only use Brazilian on expensive models.)

Then I understood it correctly. Sweet guitar mate, absolutely stunning. But then, I'm a sucker for PRS guitars. :) What pups are in it 53/10?

Just some speculation: It might be that PRS didn't have the correct documents since they were produced several years ago, and it's not possible or worth it to recertify.  They could possibly do it again with new materials if Huber can, at least in limited quantities.

thanks :) wow that is a pretty big difference (from the pics, anyway, maybe not as obvious in real life). They both look really good, though :)

yeah that's what i'd say. i haven't done any scientific tests past "this poly guitar still sounds good", lol, but i have a tokai tele which has the poly finish, and while it's still a really nice guitar, it doesn't feel as nice under my fingers as my nitro tokai strat (or nitro edwards or sg).

Phil - Huber uses Braz as an option on Orcas etc I believe.

dvorak - both have the stock pickups in, PRS "RPs".  Not everyone likes them, but I think they're great.  They're very much like BKP VHIIs.

dave_mc - the colour difference is just as obvious in real life!

Mr Air - if you're ever my way drop in for a test drive  :)

I haven't got any recording gear, but here are a few decent YouTube clips of MEs.  This first one gives a great idea of their tone, slightly honky in the mids:

A more general example:
