Just noticed Brow's thread about buying picks in bulk, and it reminded me of something I was think about the other day - where do get your strings, who has the best prices?
I usually buy the 10-packs of D'Addarios and they last ages because (surprise surprise) I hardly ever change strings. I think I last got them from Thomann when ordering something else, so shipping was free.
I know there are places like Strings and Things, but they've been around forever and maybe there are cheaper alternatives nowadays?
-
I like DR Blues strings and I've found it's cheapest to buy them on eBay, cheaper even than the online shops. I suspect it makes quite a big difference which brand you like though.
-
I don't change strings anywhere near as often as I should but I've gotten good deals from Hot Rox when buying them in boxes of 12 sets.
-
i haven't exactly done extensive searches (i hate changing strings too  ) but i found thomann was cheapest for some stuff, stringbusters for other things. and strings direct had things like newtone which were hard to get anywhere else. I don't buy bulk packets, though, as i tend to use different string brands/gauges depending on the guitar.

Mine should be easy to get hold of, D'Addario 10s on everything!
-
yeah probably
I don't really like d'addario for some reason. they feel weird under my fingers, like too tight or something.
-
I'm a Pyramid guy myself. Hard to find them anywhere, let alone for a discount!
I agree with the eBay suggestion, when I used to use EB's i would get 12 packs for $30.

Me too. I just get them from eBay in boxes of 10s from whoever has the best price :)
-
I use stringbusters, but I dont know that they're the cheapest in the whole wide world.
Good prices (a bit below most 'normal'; how anyone reliably finds these '10 packs for 15 quid' deals is beyond me and I cant be arsed finding out), good service.
-
I use soundunlimited - not sure if they're cheapest now, but they'll be in the ballpark. The day I first used them they were the cheapest I could find for D'Addarios. They went up a bit - and now they're cheaper than last time I bought from them!
I stick with them regardless now because I found they had SUPERB customer support when stuff went wrong (their local Post Office charged them wrong for a package once, and I got charged excess postage at my end... not only did soundunlimited refund me that amount immediately, but they asked me what free strings I would like as a goodwill gesture!)

In most cases German Thomann beats UK merchants despite the £10 shipping fee.
-
We sell our Feline brand strings made here in the UK by Picato cheaper than stringbusters sell Ernie Ball or Daddario for 10 sets or more.
-
I've been using strings direct for the past few years. I've been using DRs for a long time now. They last ages. They are a right bolt up on other stuff though. eBay is the best place to look.
-
It's funny, even though I buy all sorts of guitars, parts and other stuff on eBay, I've never really thought of looking for strings! No idea why!
-
Hi Philly, if you only use D'Addario, then you should look at their 25 set bulk boxes. I used to use them in the States and they used to be less than 100 bucks a box. Just found this http://www.stringsandbeyond.com/dexlniwoelgu.html (http://www.stringsandbeyond.com/dexlniwoelgu.html) - I get all my strings from these guys nowadays www.stringsandbeyond.com/ (http://www.stringsandbeyond.com/)- since Snake Oil went out of business.

This is what I did last time I got a bunch of strings. Speaking of stings... had my first experience with a hybrid set 9 - 46. Feels pretty good actually. I don't normally like 9's.
-
I've never tried a hybrid set. Often tempted to give 11s a go, but I think the treble strings would be a but too much like hard work - maybe a 10-48 or 10-50 set would be good.
-
Philly - we are just launching our 10-50 set (like trebles from 10s and bass from 11s) - we have some sample sets in stock now
We still need a catchy name and some cheesy artwork from Vince Ray for the packet (suggestions for names welcome)

9-46 is my regular set for standard tuning, love it.

+1 on Pyramid, great strings that everyone seems to love who I've given sets too. I buy them direct from Pyramid and keep some here for people passing through with amps.

dean markley blue steel strings are my favourite strings but in the UK the price is ridiculous, I once got two whole sets of 10 so 2 sets of 10 = 20 sets for just $40 in Texas!...it lasted me over 2 years, almost 3 years yet here they cost near to £7-8 a set....it's a joke!
-
Sounds like I need to ask my parents to get me lots of sets of strings next time they are in the US! For someone who is trying to be ultra careful on money outgoings the string price in the UK is a bit steep.
