What are the traditional magnets for P90s used on Les Paul Goldtops: A2 A3 A4 or A5?
I would like to get the tone of Richard Thompson's P90'd LP gold top on the Fairport Conventions song Tam Lin (on Liege and Lief) - but I don't really know which to go for.
Cheers

The early ones varied between AIII and AII but the nicest were AIII IMHO.

cool, another RT fan - seen him twice now, he is a guitar-God!!!
'Vincent' is my fave song by him, closely followed by Shoot Out The Lights or anything of 'Bright Lights' in general :D

Richard Thompson ROCKS!
I've seen him many times, both solo acoustic as well as with his band.

When I saw him with the full band he played that green guitar most of the night. His tone was 'ok' - when he pulled out the old Strat for 'Shoot Out The Lights', WOW! Now that was a great tone, makes me wonder why he doesn't play that guitar all night :?

I think I know the one you're talking about. I always thought it was a Fender Jaguar. I've also seen him play a green Strat.

Its a custom made Ferrington - it has a Duncan Broadcaster in bridge, an old Strat pup in the middle and a P90 in the neck.
I agree, I prefer his Strat sound or (as said) the old P90 Les Paul he used on Liege and Lief (that classic dirty P90 sound).

that's the one - Ferrington, I know they're nice guitars but it just goes to show that there's nothing like a vintage Strat.
I'll be watching out for him touring again, his acoustic set is great too so I don't mind if theres no band.
