Been a while since i have picked up any truly great free wood - but it still pays to have people out there keeping an eye open for me. Like when my uncle comes across someone who has a perfectly flatsawn 8' x 10"x 2" solid honduran mahogany shelf!!!

couple of bit of mystery wood in there too, will plane those up to see but I think its either sapelle or iroko. nice tap tone but if its iroko it will just get used for tools and jigs

Nice find! What will you use them for?
-
don't know yet - need to clean them up and process them into blanks - but i should get 2 bodies and 2 necks out of it
-
Nice.
My cousin's husband has a single piece of ash 8' x 30" x 2" stashed in my garage, in a few years, when he's forgotten where it is, I can see a few tele bodies making an appearance. Juansolo was eyeing it up as soon as it appeared.

so about eight 1 piece body blanks - that is worth a fair bit.
take 2' of one end for a couple of bodies and see if he notices ;)

Bizarrely it's hidden behind my brother's Lotus that's also stashed in Cleggys garage (which I suspect before long he'll forget about). All sorts of shitee ends up in there! It's a big bloody garage.

when my parents got pvc windows in, and the 30 year old mahogany frames were ripped out, i kept a couple of those. they're certainly big enough to make necks, any idea how i would know if they're actually any good?
-
Just have a look and see how straight they are-- i'd imagine they're pretty good. Have a look at the grain too and hopefully it's quite straight without much runout. And just check there are no nails/screws that are buried in it that might foul up your tools (or cause an accident if it catches on a planer etc.).
I think they'd probably be quite stable and you might get away with a single piece neck, although you could rip it lengthwise and make a 3piece to be sure it wouldn't warp.
Wez, that looks lovely! I've got a few nice bits of wood kicking around, but i've not done any guitar building for a few years now :(

yeah, the window makers tend to go for clear straight grained stuff so it tends to be good for necks. depends how big the pieces are though
I first big wood score was actually too big billets of mahogany from someone who got them from a window framer. They were being used as gate posts when i reclaimed them. It was just when i was starting out, not quite wide enough for 2-piece bodies but i got 6 3-piece bodies from those planks

well, the pieces are pretty big, my guesstimate was you could get a couple of necks out of each one, but i'm no expert :) i'll see if i can get a decent picture. assuming my dad hasn't cleared out the garage recently
