Just read Ozzys recent comment about the album sounding like Satanic Blues. That should be used to name it. Satanic Blues would be a great title. It would make me want to hear the music. 13 is so unimaginative it makes me think the music will probably be the same.
-
I hope it's better than Megadeth's album of the same name......
I must confess, I had no idea they were anywhere near completing a new album. I wonder what it'll be like?
I can never quite get my head round the fact that it's 20-odd years since the last Sabbath studio album. They've been inactive almost as long as they were active.
-
I hope its good, but I can't help but feel it will be something they should have left alone.
-
I personally can't wait. I loved the Heaven and Hell stuff, I appreciate that Dio was in another league in terms of vocals, but Ozzy Sabbath is still kinda special to me.
Just wish Bill Ward was playing.

It's hard to fathom for me that Brad Wilk from RATM is drumming on the record, I just think that was a really odd choice. Hope it works out though, I'm definitely looking forward to hearing this (though I am looking forward to the eventual tour even more!)

Not so much if you think of him as Brad Wilk from Audioslave - there are some awesome Zeppeliesque grooves on those albums.
I can't believe how little I knew out this album. I feel hopelessly out of touch. :|

But to replace Bill Ward and drum on the first Black Sabbath record in 20 years? I don't know....
-
It's a tricky situation. I know they fell out will Bill over some silly contracts issue, so he's out. I guess Vinny Appice was always more Rionnie's man than Tony's or Geezer's, so maybe he wasn't considered. And if you bring in Tommy Clufetos or whoever, it becomes perhaps too much of an "Ozzy album".
I assume it was Rick Rubin's idea to get Brad Wilk.

All good points. I'm sure any drummer in the world would be licking their chops at the prospect of playing on the new Sabbath record, they probably had their pick of the litter as well.
Have Rick and Brad ever worked together?

How's Ozzy's voice holding up ?

Yep, and I think Rubin had some involvement in producing RATM's Renegades as well.

I think Megadeth's 13 is a great album!

It's been $%ed for years. I found an early concert from Sabbath recently where he was singing unprocessed and it was awesome. Not a chance these days.

What voice?

I have to be totally honest, Alex, I've never even heard Megadeth's 13. I have all their other albums, but I haven't liked the last few and I'm not at all a fan of Chris Broderick. I was just seizing an opportunity for a bit of gratuitous bitching....

I feel the same regarding Broderick. I also disliked Grover but i appreciate him a lot more now that we have Brodericks tasteless playing in the band. No feel at all.
In regards to 13 i wanted to like it. I really did but the entire album just seems like filler apart from the tracks that were old demos from past albums. Oh and public enemy number one which is just a rehash of the system has failed era

a brief snippet of music and a look at the new album's cover. actrually sounds quite promising

Yeah, it sounds good - but impossible to draw any conclusions!
Speaking of classic (albeit slightly more youthful) melodic metal, I'm looking forward to the new Spiritual Beggars album in a couple of weeks.
-
I was quite excited to watch this.. but as Philly says, nothing of value is revealed!!
-
Ah, but it's all to build the anticipation, isn't it? ;)
it's slightly concerning to me that two of the albums i'm most looking forward to this year are by Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. The only other one i can think of are Monster Magnet, who have "only" been going about 25 years

No cause for concern there! I still like to think I'm maintaining a tenuous link with the modern world by being into Clutch.
Do you actually like the Morse-era Deep Purple? I've got a few of the albums but can never really get into them, they've moved away from hard rock but it's not exactly prog, it's..... I don't know what :? . I've heard the new album is "going to be good", but who knows really.....
And Monster Magnet! It's ages since I listened to them. Loved the first few albums, but I've gradually lost interest since the turn of the century.
-
Love Magnet. I think their only weak album is God Says No, and it ain't bad. Mastermind is really strong and worth a buy.
As is Earth Rocker from Clutch for those that haven't picked it up yet. Bwaaahahahahahaha!

I was going to type the same thing. I had a listen to that recently because I couldn't remember just how bad it was and yeah.....it's truly awful.
-
Their new single God Is Dead is actually pretty good. Don't like the vocals, but Tony's playing is, as always, fantastic. Love a few of the riffs. Geezer sounds great too, and Brad isn't bad. The mix is actually very good, I love the amount of Geezer I'm hearing. No need to fret, this won't be a Death Magnetic sequel for Rubin. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album!

After the 6 minute mark it got interesting, everything before that bored the cr@p out of me.

theres a youtube link for it.
you can hear the autotune on Ozzy's voice I reckon, sucks the life out of it in my opinion.. the middle part of the track is a little boring i think, but overall its not bad!

Definitely picked up the pace a bit when they switched to that really swinging riff, wish they woulda used it more. Had a really cool "Fairies Wear Boots" feel to it, and that's one of my favorite Sabbath tunes. I feel like Brad coulda done better in that part though, Bill definitely had more of a jazzy, swingy feel to him.
-
Just listened to the single. Vocals sound weird. Bill sorely missed. Reminds me of hearing Doom and Gloom by The Stones - not bad but kind of tired sounding and not a patch on the glory days. Curious about the rest of the album.
-
Ozzy is done, I prefer to remember them as they were: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPSnxkqJtco (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPSnxkqJtco)

I effing LOVE that!
I love the production, with Ozzy up in the mix and relatively untouched (actually a little more Autotune might not have gone amiss, gwEm!!!), I love the nod to Faeries Wear Boots.
Awesome.
Agree that Bill Ward would have taken it in a more Sabbathy direction though.
-
Sounds pretty good to me 8)
-
Needless to say enjoy what you want to and take it for what it is but to me this aint 'proper Sabbath'. Iommi and Geezer are still cool but no Bill Ward means no Black Sabbath and Ozzy couldnt carry a tune around in a suitcase. I wish Dio were still here to do Heaven and Hell. I bet he could have sung like an angel right up until he died in stark contrast to Ozzy who cant sing any more and frankly is an embarassment live.
Call me a troll if you will but i like to think im a realist. Theres past it and then theres Ozzy.....he needs to retire. This aint an album for the fans otherwise theyd resolve their differences and play......I refuse to believe any of them are hard up and if any one is it'll e Bill Ward who wont have many royalties and hasnt done much/any thing since he quit sabbath.
Pink Floyd got it right split up and remain dignified unless its genuine and for the best.

It's all relative I think. I've heard the song quite a few times on Planet Rock now, and its grown on me slightly - i must admit its quite a lot better than the other new rock they play. But I wouldn't say it's a patch on their 1970s heyday.
-

I am with you on this one. I have decided to let this one pass me by. Better to just ignore it than be disappointed ... Sabbath are already immortalized in my book; no need to go further! :)
-
I'll certainly be buying this, simply because I've got all their other stuff. And who knows, they may never record again (after all, except for Heaven & Hell and the studio tracks on Reunion, there hasn't been any new Sabbath material for 18 years!)
I expect it to be "good", simply because of the people involved, but they're not suddenly going to recapture their youthful energy and release another Master of Reality.
-
I'll definitely buy it, but not for any other reason than listening to Tony still rip.
-
So who's got the album?
I've only listened to it once, so it needs to sink in a bit, however, first impressions..... wasn't sure about the first few tracks but by the end I was thinking it's really rather super. Certainly much better than expected.
-
mine was posted on Sunday (ironic?), so hopefully it'll be waiting for me when i get home
-
similarly to Plenum n Heather I was going to let it pass me by. But perhaps now I'll get it on iTunes if theres some more positive comments.
-
Likewise, a friend who was of the same opinion as me and was going to let it pass, got it and rates it. I suspect a lot of it was low expectations, but I might have to give it a go...
-
I think its pretty good actually - from the middle tracks onwards especially - certainly better than the 2 stars it got in Guitarist.
-
I listened to all the little clips iTunes has. It does sound like there's a few good tracks on there, God Is Dead might be one of the weaker ones. Ponder ponder...
-
On it's way from Amazon, should be here today. Can't wait.
-
it arrived yesterday, and i only got a chance to listen to about 5 minutes of it this morning. not much heard then! certainly the beginning is very 70's Sabbath, and I'm very pleasantly surprised by Ozzy's voice. he's singing in a lower register, rather than pushing it, and it really suits the moody nature of the music. looking forward to hearing the rest of the album now
-
I imagine it'll be typical Ozzy talk singing and over produced everything but I will still get it and enjoy it for Tony and Geezers playing. There was a rumor that the financial thing with Ward was done to save him face as he just couldn't keep up anymore, who knows? who cares haha?
-
I might have believed the thing about Bill Ward - except it comes from the Osbournes:
http://news.iheart.com/articles/rock-news-104648/ozzy-shedding-new-light-on-black-11264916/ (http://news.iheart.com/articles/rock-news-104648/ozzy-shedding-new-light-on-black-11264916/)
Still, to me at least, the key component to the Black Sabbath sound is Geezer and Tony.
-
Well, like I thought it's just ok. The drums stick out like a sore thumb to me and push the songs too much. Despite what they say about stripping back to basics I think they tried to hard to be current and modern. Ah, well it's got a few cool riffs and solos 8)
-
The more I listen to it, I'm finding it's the opposite of a "grower" (a "shrinker"? :? )
Everything sounds pretty good, but there are very few memorable melodies or truly notable riffs. It's probably an inappropriate thing to say, but I can't help thinking if Dio had been around to add his contribution to the same raw material, it would've turned out a whole lot better.
-
Agree. But if Dio was around today chances are it wouldn't have happened at all. More likely HnH would be following up The Devil You Know (which is a $%ing stellar album imo). I'd bet that Dio would've clipped Tony and Geezer round the ears if they put forward some of 13's stuff
-

Agree - it would have been the second H & H album.
Having said that - I still like it. It's definitely harking back to old Sabbath, in a modern age. There are nods to loads of the classics, which I like. Ozzy's voice is ok, not messed around with too much, and I think he sounds better than he has in a long time. And the Iommi/Butler sound is immense, as ever.
The speculation about Bill Ward being deliberately belligerent to save face - I believe that. In fact, when the whole thing started, I thought that initially. He's struggled to play live for years, and I think it's perfectly plausible that he couldn't cut it in a studio. It sad, and I love his playing, but they're all so old and drug addled, I'm just pleased to have something out of them!!!
-
And it's straight in at Number One in the album chart, apparently! Crikey.
-
Very shrewd to have it released so close to fathers day

 I never would've thought of that in a million years, but you could be right!
