Hello,
I just picked up an Epiphone LP Jr made in Indochina. It has the stopbar tailpiece, single humbucker in the bridge. For some reason I really like the playability of this guitar!!!!! Sounds good thru a Fender Blues Jr 15W amp with a Cannabis Rex speaker.
Looking to get a better sound and request suggestions for blues and classic rock and roll. Coil tap would be neat but not necessary. Thanks for any suggestions!

I think the Mule would suit you well as it's very versatile. It has a classic blues/rock voicing, and if pushed hard it's even able at doing metal. If you want a brighter but still vintage tone have a look at the Riff Raff. Another option could be the Mississippi Queen which is a humbuckersized P90. You wont be able to get coil split, but you'll get a really great blues/rock tone.

If you think the guitar is worth an expensive upgrade, I suggest a Mule or, you want a it more mids, a Black Dog,

If it's the type with a bolt-on neck(?), I wonder if a slightly more powerful, fatter sounding humbucker might suit it better. Crawler maybe?

Hello and thanks for your time. As I have a P90 equipped instrument, the mule seems a good choice. Will listen to it!

Hello Telerocker,
That is a valid view point, indeed. But the guitar is surprisingly fun to play. I will look into both of your choices. Thank you!

Yes, Philly Q it is a bolt on. Thanks for another candidate. I have been thinking about a lesser priced SD SH-4. Cost factor wise....

I have one of these plywood "Jr" (mine has two buckers). They are indeed better (playability and even tone) than you would expect form such a dirt cheap piece of cr@p, but they (at least mine) are really not worth a serious upgrade IMHO. If you can find a second-hand SH4 for cheap that would be more than enough. Keep the good BKP stuff for a decent guitar.
My 0.2 cents...

Hello BigB,
This one definitely plays great for a you put it guitar. Money wise I know it does not really make for a great idea, but it needs to sound better IMHO. It is even holding tuning!!!!! Your's is certainly the most cost efficient and thanks!

Well, I recently bought myself a cheapo second hand epiphone wilshire RI, and much to my surprise it ends up being a really cool piece of gear - plays great, sounds good and does hold the tune - so what can I say ? I still think a SH4 would be a "good enough" match here (and in case it was not clear the SH4 is already a quite good pickup in my book), but if you feel this guitar is worth a BKP then AFAICT the Mule, RiffRaff, Abraxas or Crawler should work for blues and classic rock, depending on how dark / birght / fat / thin is the guitar and what kind of "blues / classic rock" tone you're after.

Howdy BigB,
I am in a fog of indecision. I had an Epi Les Paul Special I with P90's on order. Got a great deal on it. So I thought I had the P90 scene covered. After receiving the guitar which had a 2 day inspection and picking from the dealer due to previous guitar quality issues, it arrived with a gouge/crack in the neck.
Since this Epi Junior plays so well, I am now considering putting a humbucker sized P90 in it. I have read about an inexpensive GFS Mean 90 and heard it on some youtubes.
In your opinion, IIRC, I can get the SH-4 with 4 wires and put a coil split switch in it. It seems to me that in single coil mode it will not come close to a true P90 sound. Thanks!

Get an MQ, you will love it.

A coil-splitted paf-like bucker will neither sound like a proper F-like single-coil nor like a proper P90. Now I don't have enough experience with hb-sized P90s to be of any help here, sorry.

Hello Telerocker,
Ah yes that would be cool. Unfortunately, am sure the expense is more that the guitar and my pocketbook :(!
Thanks for the advice, though.......

Thanks for the honest opinion.. I do need the P90 sound.

Real single coils and P90's will never sound the same. The big coil gives a P90 the fullness and midrange of a humbucker, just with a little more edge on top.

Secondhand Gibson P-94 or Duncan Phat Cat, then, maybe?

Good advice from Philly. The p94 is not bad at all.
