Title: BKP humbucker with the most punchy mids
Post by: jjensson on February 23, 2013, 10:31:13 PM
I'm wondering wich BKP humbucker has the most punchy mids? I'm thinking it would be an A5 type, right? (since ceramics tend to compless the mids).

Any suggestions very appreciated.

Probably the aftermath, actually.
The Holy Diver and Black Dog are also rather middy.

Interesting, since Aftermath and Painkiller are ceramic. Always thought that ceramic magnets have compressed mids.

My view as well. The Nailbomb is maybe a bit less punchier in the mids (but tighter in the low end).

BTW, has anyone played the DiMarzio Breed and can compare the mids to the BKP Holydiver? The Breed bridge doesn't have that high end clickiness that i hate so much in pickups, instead it has a punchy "pop" in the mids which i really like. I wish it sounded a bit more open, though. (read: sometimes it sounds a bit boxy or cardboardy to me).

I have had both in my alder strat. The Breed has more power and more low mids than the Holydiver. What I did not like about it was that artificial sizzle in the top end that most high output DiMarzios have and that the midrange had a nasal quality to it. The Holydiver does not have that at all. The highs are smooth and the mids are fat but not nasal. And it works a lot better with the tone controls on the amp.

Cheers Stephan

Of the ones I have played it's the Holydiver in my ash/maple strat. But I have not played all of the contenders mentioned, in particular not the Aftermath and Painkiller.

Crawler is very midrangey but I wouldn't call it punchy.

Crawler is what I was about to suggest too - a hotter and more modern take on a PAF with mids pushed forward.

If it's about punchy mids the A-Bomb clearly beats the Crawler. The Crawler is more about "warm" midrange.
