Title: Offset/Mis-matched CoilWinding ,on Humbuckers
Post by: EarthRoosterUK on March 06, 2013, 08:55:03 PM
             {NB-List modified,Thanks to Eric Hellstyle ,Tim & HTHAmps}
Hi there, been searching for a listing, or something definative, on what BK pups are completely Symmetrically-wound through to very Asymmetrical.
The only HB pickups I've really got on with ok have been 'DualResonance' DiMarzio ( ) types

 So far,I've gathered that;

Purely Symmetrical (ie same DC reading/same number of wire turns) ,are Exclusively-
Aftermath &
Blackhawk

  (sort of) Symmetrical-ish types include-
Crawler
Cold Sweat
Holy Diver ?
Riff Raff
Warpig ?

   (somewhat) Asymmetrical types include-
Black Dog
Rebel Yell

   (noticably) Asymmetrical types include-
VH11
Mule
Stormy Monday
Nailbomb

In your experiences & knowlage,if anything above is wrong ,do chime in. And anything to add to the above'd be welcome.
                                                   Regards,David. (phew,1st post! :D )

I believe the painkiller is wound pretty close to the holy diver, so probably symmetrical

the bridge cold sweat is asymmetrical
the miracle man is probably asymmetrical as well, considering its voicing

Hi There,Eric and Many Thanks for your input :)
(shame that AlnicoV isn't an option on  +Bridge+  ColdSweat/MiracleMan)
(and, that the Warpig would appear to be close-matched coils?...)
As any more info. comes in,I'll do an update to the list....
  Coincidentally,Q. to all:
Have you found that Asymmetric-winding is one contributing factor to a Pick-Up's
'openness'/dimensionality? (having taken Alnico -V's- Ceramic into account)
                                                 Cheers!,David.

Black Hawk and Aftermath have symmetrically wound coils, all the other humbuckers are asymmetrically wound.

Are all of the asymmetrical humbuckers wound with the screw coil as the hotter one Tim?

I think by symmetrical he meant "close dc reading" or "lot less asymmetrical than the most extreme ones"
I understand most of the pickups don't have exact matched coils

Thank You ,So much, for all your input: :D
HTHAmps: that's a good point about the screw-coil side being the 'hotter' one, typically?
EricHellstyle:yes indeed, 'closeDC reading' (ie coil-turns *related*) sums it up well...
               Tim: Well,that pretty-much wraps it up,Ta!
hmmm, maybe it's time for me to look at any other Contemp.AlnicoV pickups = Warpig
                                                        Cheers,All! David.

Yes the screw coil is the hotter wound coil.
Symmetrically wound coils have the same number of turns of wire per coil but are still hand wound, as are all our coils.
