Title: Pickup Recommendations for Walnut/Maple
Post by: Djentleman! on March 07, 2013, 02:50:48 AM
Hey guys, I currently have a Carvin DC727 in the making, and I plan on swapping out the bridge PUP for a Bareknuckle at some point. The specs are:

25.5" neck
Maple top
Walnut neck and body
Birdseye maple fretboard and headstock

Tones I'm after: djenty, but not purely djent. I need to be able to play bluesy licks, crystal clear leads, thick and heavy power chords, and have them be very tight. I don't want low end "flubbing" since it is a 7 string. I currently own Aftermaths in a PRS which is mahogany with a maple top, and I find that the wood darkens the PUPs significantly. I have an Aftermath in my Ibanez which is basswood and find the tone much drier and punchy. My complaint about the Aftermaths is they sound very cold sometimes, and lack the full dynamic spread that I need. I do like the fact that they are extremely tight, articulate and clear, and I'd like to retain those, but up the warmth a bit and give some more dynamics. My thoughts have been towards the following possiblities:

- Alnico V Blackhawk
- Alnico Nailbomb
- Ask if they can do a custom made Aftermath with Alnico (the neck PUP is alnico afterall)
- Alnico Warpig

Obviously I'm slapping the Alnico on because it's warmer, but I do love ceramics for the clarity, so if anything is warm and ceramic don't hesitate to suggest them. I'm open to anything really. Thanks for reading!  :D

You are certainly going in the right direction with Alnico V to get a warmer, fuller sound-i would say go Blackhawk

I was certainly leaning more towards a Blackhawk, they seem to have more "purr" to them, which I really love the sound of  :D

Still looking for advice on this. Listening to clips I actually like the ceramic Blackhawk better, the Alnico seems to "flub out" in the lower end. I would like to put an Aftermath in for the tightness, but I'm afraid of it being darkened too much by the walnut like it has been in mahogany.
