Title: Amp rebuild day!
Post by: Toe-Knee on March 08, 2013, 09:27:27 PM
I did a final rebuild on my amp as i pretty much trashed my old one trying various mods drilling holes in the chassis etc so i wanted a clean build. I'll still be keeping my original build to try out further mods and for nostalgia as it was the first amp i ever built even if it had a few random pops going on here and there.

I also upped the spec on a few parts. I was going to go with Clarostat pots but a few of them were out of stock and i didnt want to wait.

This one turned out fantastically. Whisper quiet and fantastic tone.

I got a bit slapdash towards the end (channel switch wiring & Loop as my new guitar arrived and i needed the amp finished to play it as i pulled the Onetics from my previous build)

So here are the pics of the new build in no particular order.

I have a real soft spot for beautifully neat and tidily done solder (mostly because I stink at it I think) and that is some great work there. Fantastic job!

Looks awesome, as always, mate.

How would this differ to mine spec wise then?

Different spec caps in the power amp and different caps in the preamp and a few resistor/cap values are different here and there.

Not much to be honest with you in the grand scheme of things.

Thanks for the comments guys! I still need a few small tie-wraps to tidy up a few bits but im very pleased with the turnout.

you could say that! The first one was meant to be the last but i ended up modding the life out of it and damaged the PCB in the process and made the chassis quite beaten after adding holes for switches etc that i later decided i didnt want. So I decided to rebuild it how i had finally settled on the circuit and have a clean build that wont be molested (or at least i hope not!)

I'll be moving onto a mesa mark type amp next.

That amp looks like rubbish. Please save yourself the embarrassment of having your name attached to it and send it to me for immediate disposal. :)

I do, but I hate to see my friend, Tony, suffer through the ignomy of being named the builder of that atrocity even more. Therefore, I feel it's my duty as a true friend to bite the bullet and remove the amp from the UK. All I ask is that Tony pay for the shipping and any import taxes. I will take care of the rest!

amazingly neat work! I have recently been modding a fender champ and have come to appreciate the work that goes into it...

Indeed a very beautiful looking build. I wished mine looked as neat. The only amp I built that comes close is my Chieftain build w/o reverb but that has far less parts in it.

Cheers Stephan

It took a fair amount of practice and bending wires into shape over and tying them in place for a while to make sure it all stayed just so for a while before soldering anything in place.

I was hoping to get the shielded wires done a bit tidier but the stuff i have has cr@p insulation then kept melting and shorted the shield to the core. I will probably have a final tidy up later at some point.

This is what i'm aiming for

Tony, you're really giving me a hard time here to decide which amp to get. Seeing those pics I will need to save up some more money and get one built by you, that looks amazing! Tidy work, mate :)

Cheers
