Title: Latest Pro Mod Charvels
Post by: tekbow on March 16, 2013, 02:00:01 PM
Can't seem to find them on charvels website at the minute, but some indirect references have been made to them via dealers etc

Scoop is, new San Dimas style 1's and SoCals are being made at fenders mexican plant with the same aesthetic as the old US ones from a few years ago, and are about £200 cheaper. Now i always kicked myself for not buying one, and i never bought one of the MIJ pro mods because i liked the visual style of the US ones better. Now i wish i had (and still could) because to be blunt, I'll take MIJ over MIM at the same price point any day of the week.

I know better than to be sniffy about MIM, but.. i guess i would have preferred an MIA or MIJ. They weren't exactly expensive when new.. just never got around to buying one

No Idea whether the MIJ ones are still being made, although plenty out there still. Why couldn't they have just made the MIJ's in the same style as the MIA's..

anywho..

the japanese factory shut, far as i'm aware, so they're not making them any more. Which sucks. :( I never got round to buying one either... the maple neck had a slightly weird tint in any pictures I saw which i didn't really like (and I never got round to seeing one in the flesh).

the MIM ones seem to have recessed trems, though. And seem to have ditched the dimarzio option. The prices I've seen have been almost identical to the MIJ prices too...

Yep, you see, thats what i'm talking about.. and thanks for pointing out the recessed trem, never noticed. Thats a deal breaker, I will not be buying one..

Oh by the way, the tint in the pics was just an effect, any i saw in reality were satin finished with no tint.

Did the MIA's and MIJ's not have original FR's too?

Yes the MIJ ones do have an OFR, although they are only recessed for dive bombs. The bridge has little springy metal bits which hit the body if you go the other way. I saw a SoCal go on eBay for £300, perfect condition with hardcase, was very tempted but I already have it so didn't see the point.

They do have OFR but they are different.
The large bolts that hold the strings in place are a different size and the back of the saddles are slightly beveled. I believe the FR's on the pro mods are Korean made and not German.

Ah well.. you see when i say OFR, I mean a german made FR.

but i could live with it on an MIJ, and especially on a non recessed FR. there's just too many little tweaks on these that prevent me from wanting on.. As I said, MIJ vs MIM at the same price point? MIJ please..

when anyone says OFR i think German made, but I'm sure the literature i've seen calls the trems on the MIJ pro mods OFR's too. I owned one. It's fine.

Owned? as in not any more? why'd you move it on? there's a black MIJ in a shop near me actually.. might go try it today.. any good i'll put a deposit down.

on the recessing thing, since owning a peavey wolfgang years back (set flat against the nody, dive bombs only) i just don't think there's a better way to mount a floyd. get the tuning stability, better sustain, ability to use d-tunas. Eddie had it right back in the 80's. My axis is the same.

I had the back recessed on mine by feline. I like to do pull ups. I moved it on because once I got the PRS I could do much of the same stuff without needing string locks at the bridge end. However the PRS doesn't feel like a floyd more like a really robust vintage trem. The Vigier trem feels much more like a floyd. I can dive it and get better flutter with it than with the PRS and it's still only single locking. Granted, the price point is different than a pro mod on both the Vigier and the PRS but it took me owning a few trem equipped guitars to figure out what suits me best. Can't go wrong with a pro mod though.

Christophe Godin with the single locking vigier trem.

nope, frt-x000s, the korean-made ones, as dmoney said. I prefer the schaller-made ones.

Ah ok, could sworn the MIA's at least were gotoh's..

Think it says a lot that none of the US made one's appear on ebay that often

I like the OFR specials... only meaningful difference is the block.

I've always liked the San Dimas Charvals and its history with EVH. You could knock one of these up with Warmouth parts though surely? Or is it that logo that seduces?

Could have done, but i reckon it would cost more to put one together to the spec of the MIA's or even the MIJ's including a selected hardware swap out, than they actually originally cost
