Title: Something for the neck in my Tele (HB maybe?)
Post by: richardjmorgan on March 17, 2013, 12:14:46 PM
I'm considering swapping out the neck pickup in my 52RI Tele – I'm currently pretty happy with the stock bridge pickup, but the neck's a bit "meh", particularly for solo-y stuff with a bit of gain on it. It's pretty ok for cleans, I guess, but nothing super-exciting. I'm not really sure if it's this particular pickup, or Tele neck pickups in general that I'm not really into. Was wondering if maybe sticking a humbucker of some sort in might be the way to go, maybe with a coil-split so I can get single sounds out of it too. Or is there a normal-sized Tele neck PU that'll wow me?

Not got any particular sound in mind that I'm looking for – most of my playing with this guitar tends to lean towards the punkier end of the rock spectrum, but this really is my "playing a bit of whatever takes my fancy" guitar, so versatility would be a plus.

Anyway, any advice/suggestions would be welcome!

I'm quite fond of the BGF52 neck as far as I'm concerned, it has a stratty character that I find more usable than most Tele necks. This with a 4-way switch (the additional position is both pickups serial, which brings your Tele in the 'bucker territory wrt/ output and tone)...

If you're going humbucker-size, I think a Mississippi Queen HB-sized P90 is great for the neckposition of a tele. You got the oomphh from the fatsounding big P90 coil, but retain clarity too.

Good suggestion if you're going for a humbucker rout.
