Title: Question for MJW Roadstar 18 users
Post by: pickergra on March 20, 2013, 06:49:03 PM
Hi all,

Noticed on some older posts there are some MJW users around on this forum.  Thinking of the Roadstar 18 and wondered if anyone has used it for or thinks it would be suitable for country twang type sounds.  Not super clean Fender Twin tones, more the very slight breakup voxish/chimey type tones normally associated with players like Brad Paisley and Dr Z amps.

Any input appreciated, cheers.

I have the 18w with EL84s. It certainly does chime, not like a Dr. Z though, more Marshall like.

I can get a Brad Paisley sound out of it, even more so with my Wampler Paisley Drive.

Love mine!  :D

I've had one. Not a terribly bright amp. More or less what Pete said. The only Dr Z I've heard (I forget the model) sounded like an ice-pick by comparison. Overall I'd agree with marshally character (though its not terribly marshally either, its about the closest relative in family sound).

I have a 36 watt Roadstar and 1x12 cab with a Celestion gold.  It definitely has that fatter Brad Paisley type twang going on with the alnico speaker.  The cleans are very nice.  The 18 watt is similar with reduced headroom and a slightly softer feel.
I think choosing the right speaker will be key.
