Title: Cheap Practice Amp?
Post by: TheyCallMeVolume on March 25, 2013, 03:02:56 PM
Hey all, got a question for ya. I'm getting kinda tight on cash, and I'm thinking up ways to pad my wallet a bit. The only thing I can think of is to sell my JMP-1, which would bring in some decent coin, but I'd need to replace it in some way. Seeing as I now have the Bad Cat Unleash, my options are a bit more open as I can actually simply run a pedal through it and use it as an amp. Anyways, getting back on topic, I'm looking for a cheaper alternative to my JMP-1 to at least hold me over until I save my money up for the SL-5. Any suggestions?

If you want a cheap and good practice amp have a look at the Micro Terror from Orange. I haven't played it myself but it's supposed to kick mighty arse according to tone and size.

Good call from Mr.Air on the Microterror.
The Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 5 is nice practiceamp too.

they aren't made anymore but the fender champion 600 is a good cheap one, especially for a class A valve amp, and once modded it is capable of sounding amazing. The orange micro terror is good too but the valve would have to be changed if it was me as I hate cheap chinease valves, once you've tried NOS mullards there's no turning back...

For something with valves the Laney VC-15 ,LC-15 or Blackstar HT-5.

If you're not bothered with valves then a little Line 6 Spider amp would be fine, I use one myself for practicing at home. The big rig is in the garage.

Valves are important to me at gig levels but for playing at home I think you might as well go s/s. I'm more than happy with my 2w Microcube. The Marshall sim suits me fine and cleans up really well from the guitar volume. I don't use effects live but I get a lot of fun playing around with the Microcube effects at home particularly delay, reverb and chorus. At 2w it's still capable of neighbour annoying volume but doesn't need to be cranked to sound great.

Have a listen to the demo:

The bigger problem is that you won't get a good price for the JMP-1 in the current market. I feel selling guitar stuff has become at decent prices had become really tough. It seems nobody has money anymore.
You'd most certainly want to buy a used amp, but selling one as well?

I don't necessarily need a mind-boggling return. Just looking to get a couple bucks in my pocket.

Have to agree about the Orange Micro Terror, I bought one a few months ago because I was curious to see if it lived up to all the good reviews I'd been reading about them and I've had a big smile on my face ever since , For something so small with only three knobs it punches well above its weight, especially into a decent cab ( a good 1 x 12 minimum ), and even at keeping the neighbours happy volumes .
It's even inspired me to dust off my old pedals that I haven't used in years and take a trip down memory lane and for 95 quid you can't go wrong .

Actually was just getting ready to post that I got the Micro Terror and have had it for about a week. I actually think it's a great piece of gear. That SL-5 will have to be pretty damn good for me to trade this for it. Overall I'd definitely recommend it to anyone, it sounds awesome.

Great purchase mate, I surely love mine. I can even play metal with it when I stick my Bad Monkey in front of it and it sounds huge for such a little fella through a 4*12. AND it even let's my Holydiver shine ^^

Can definitely see it handling some metal with a TS type pedal.

I love how Marshall-y it can get, I was actually quite surprised. Not a bad thing in my book!

Another +1 on the Micro Terror from me!

I use mine as a gigging backup to my Splawn and SLO Clone and volume wise it's easilly upto the task through a 2x12 cab.

I was really pleasantly surprised by how good it sounds when I 1st tried 1, especially for what it is. I don't mean that to sound snobby, that's not my intention at all, but I think some people see it as being a bit of a joke going by the fact it's only the size of an iPhone and just expect it to sound rubbish.

Not to mention the fact it's a hybrid, makes some people down on it before they even try it. It's by no means meant to be your #1 have-to-have amp, it's just supposed to be a fun little practice/backup amp. And that it certainly is!

In deed a very nice backup and practice amp. I just happened to try it out half a year ago, it was standing around in my local music store and when I saw it, I thought of it as a joke as well. My girlfriend was like "OH MY GOD LOOK AT THIS SWEET LITTLE BOX" and I was like what in the name of Guitar God is this supposed to be? Tried it out in the store and bought it the same day, especially for that small price. Amazing. It even helped me through the 2 months where my Valveking was dead and I had no cash to change tubes, perfect rehearsal backup and oh my how loud it gets through a 4*12 - Orange outdid themselves with that little fella. :D

Yup. It still pales in comparison to my 2203 or a Rockerverb or something of the sort IMO, but it does what it does very well. And basically for the price of a pedal. I still can't believe at how cheap the thing is.

The only thing which surprises me about the Micro Terror is that (unless I've missed something), it again doesn't have a "less than 1 Watt"  setting - which on the face of it seems to make even the Tiny Terror more appropriate for home use, as it least that goes down to 7w...?  :?

Indeed. Never had a problem with volume or gain though. My guess would be because it's part SS.

Yeah, I guess the point of a low power setting is to get power valve breakup at bedroom volumes; the Micro Terror has a solid state power amp (Class D, AFAIK) so you won't get that at any volume.

No problem with the volume, you just have to play with the knobs. :)

I have to snap myself this little monster too. Big smile when you hook it up to a big cab.

The Peavey Bandit 65 is quite loud and takes pedals well. I find them for 60-75$ on craigslist all the time.  For a bit more you can look for a Crate Stealth GT-50 combo.  Really nails the 80's metal tone.  I got mine for 250$.

I have a HT-5RH and HTV-212 cab.  I run an MXR 10 band eq KFK in front of it to get a better metal tone from it.  It does need help for that.  I did try the eq in the fx loop but for what I wanted, in front as a boost was better.  Added more mid range and made it sound more aggressive and brightened it up a good amount.  The amp worked really well with the 112 cab from the HT range which I used for a short while but going to the 212 was better.  Only complaint is the clean channel is nothing special and the amp sounds a little dark.

If it's 20 watt SS, the micro terror has plenty of headroom then?

I'm contemplating the new Laney Iommi 15W practice amp.

Any opinions on it?

$600 for a practice amp is not really 'cheap', but then again my Cube 30X cost $400 according to the 2008 receipt

The small Laneys like the Cub's have a lot of fans. At home I use a Blues Junior with a Suhr Riot in front. Mature sounds at low levels.

It is solid state, yes, but the little single tube that's smiling at you from the casing has a great impact resulting in an amazing sound for such a small amp with plenty of headroom and especially lots of volume! I use this thing to play metal (boosted with a Digitech Bad Monkey) and I can't urge people enough to get one. So much bang for the buck, it's amazing  8)
