Title: Mandolins?
Post by: MrBump on April 08, 2013, 07:54:33 PM
I've never owned or played one - any mandolin owners on here?  Is it worth getting a cheap Ebay one to have a play around on?

Well, you know what we'd say to a beginner guitar player if they asked if it was worth picking up something as cheap as possible off of e-bay........................

What, a Gandalf hat, a dodgy syrup and a funny little Django Reinhardt moustache?

My Mum wanted to learn a few years ago so I got her a Westfield one. Nothing to complain about with it.

i picked up an old one of ebay for £25 with a view to restoring it.   quick clean and a pack of strings later and it was done.  I was actually disappointed by how little work it needed.   sold it for 4 times as much a few weeks later though

That sounds like a good bit of business Wez. Just had a quick search on eBay and one listing states "has two strings broken hence the low price". Are Mandolin strings really that expensive?  :)

Here's my Dean mandolin in action.  I've played a few others in guitar shops around the same (£400) price point and its the best at that price.

btw, I could be persuaded to part with this beauty with OHSC if anyone was interested enough.

My girlfriend bought me a Vintage (brand) Mandolin for my 21st birthday.

I used it for a bit and was even in an acoustic 3 piece with a Flautist and acoustic guitarist for a while until normal cr@p happened. I've since bought another chord book with the intent of taking it back up, hasn't happened yet though
