I am looking for a HB for pretty much just the clean tone (neck). I have a Warpig to handle the distortion; I have talked to Tim via email and everything sounds good and I can't decide! I have somewhat narrowed it down to Cold Sweat or Miracle Man for the clean tone. I want a jazzy tone but not too mellow, I do quite a bit of tapping, so something that would complement that would be what I am looking for. Anything would be appreciated. Thanks.

cold sweat

The Miracle Man has a more vibrant clean tone than the Cold Sweat in my experience. It's natural compression is also great for legato and tapping.
-
How about an AV Mississippi Queen in the neck?
Some forum members have great results with that combo.
-
sorry - ceramic magnets for clean? whats going on?!
-
None of BKP's neck pickups are ceramic.
Ceramics in the bridge position can sound good clean.
-
Ratty's right! We did the Miracle Man strut!
-
haha - ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh i understand...
-
i dont....
the miracle man strut sounds awesome lol.... but whats it meant to mean!?!??!
-
I guess it is all preference but I have no way of knowing, haha.
-
For a neck clean tone the Miracle Man sounds better, the neck cold sweat ounds awesome dirty, it has a mid range peak that gets a great shred neck tone like Vinnie Moore.
The Miracle Man neck is more natural with less of a peak and better for clean work.

I looked for your clip Ratty but couldn't find it. Did you delete it in Ol's housekeeping mission?

Thanks Sambo! It's supposed to me Stray Cat Strut by the Stray Cats! Not as good as Mr Stezer plays it though!

I did a short part of it with my Warpig just to show that it sounds good clean.
The MQ's do it a helluva lot better though.

What are MQ's?
Which pickup (Cold Sweat/Miracle Man) is more mellow and would sound good (I know both would) with huge chords and somewhat jazzy; I am looking for almost a Seymour Duncan SH-2 kind of sound, but they dont have nearly the sustain as a BK. I have played the SH-2 but I didnt do any tapping, so I didnt know how it would come out.
-
mq's are missippi queens- p-90s in humbucker sized cases.
im guessing that the cold sweat would be more mellow as its got a lower output...?

Disregarding distortion (i know this is mostly preference) what it the hands down BEST clean tone? There are many differences I know, but oh well.

IMHO, Knopfler on Sultans Of Swing.
-
yea that is quite good, what's he use?

Yeah, that, or Hendrix - Little Wing.
I think Knopfler used a strat on that song? Thats what he's using in the video anyway. It sounds stratty to me as well.
-
or Gilmour, he has some great tones.
I also really like Jeff Buckley's early live guitar tone, when he played with just himself, a tele, and an amp. It was a really nice tone.
-
Dead on there Willo. Jeff Buckley, amp and Tele- sublime.
-
I have to add Richard Thompson to this. Listen to his tone and you can see where Mark Knopfler is coming from. Also Jeff Buchanan has a great clean tone from his Tele.
-
Do you mean Roy Buchanan Phil?
-
Sorry 38th - Roy Buchanan it should have been - i had brain fade there  I was thinking of Jeff Beck, then I rethought and only deleted back to the 'B', though Jeff Beck does get some great clean tones.
I also think Peter Green and Paul Kossoff should be in the list, especially as they are thought of as Les Paul players (though both used a strat on some things).

I think he used a strat.

Its OK Phil happens to me all the time.

Knopfler is famous for Strats (he has/had a Fender signature model, no?) and has also used Pensa Suhr guitars (which look quite stratish to me, at least). When he pulls out a Gibson LP (like on "Money for Nothing") you can hear the difference instantly. 8)
But hey, no prizes to any of us for observing that Knopfler has a fab single-soil clean tone! Other great cleans? Well, I'll +1 to Richard Thompson. And I'll say Jerry Garcia, too ... and the relatively unknown Steve Kimock likewise gets some great cleans. Oh, and Jerry Donahue! I'm interested to hear how the new Peavey Omniac he had a hand in turns out.
IMO, the BKPs for the clean tones have got to be the Apaches and Sultans, or Country Boys for Teles.

Django had a great clean tone, and so did Segovia! PDT_008
