Title: just ordered a couple BYOC pedals!
Post by: JJretroTONEGOD on April 17, 2013, 08:46:27 PM
I've just ordered a BYOC ESV silicone fuzz and a BYOC Triboost! both pedals are exactly what I'm looking for tone wise.

My idea was to update this thread with my progress with pics and show you how I get on in stages, then at the end post some audio clips.

I can't wait to get soldering and build them, my brother is also an artist so I'm hoping to get him to custom paint them which will make them unique and a bit more personal.

the next update will be when I get the kits.  :D

Great project and the updates would be fun to follow. I have thought about doing a simple BYOC box, but my soldering skills are minimal converging on the non existing and I have NO knowledge of electronics so it just seems like a too big step and I would rather play boxes than making them  :D

Cool! I'm absolute garbage with a soldering iron (and the math behind circuitry leaves my eyes rolling round my head), so I have a lot of respect/envy for those that 'can'. :)

I really like the BYOC kits. I managed to cobble together a tubescreamer copy and it's really good. Bit noisy though probably due to my poor soldering technique. Tempted to do one of their trem pedals as I've wanted a good trem for ages.

Listen to this man...if you are not sure turn around while you still can.
With the help of John here I have become an addict too!
On the plus side I just met a girl with whom this may actually help me.  8)

Anyhow, welcome to the legion of the happily damned!

It's a good thing I don't know how to solder, or else BYOC would have a good amount of my money.

for the price it's an absolute bargain, 3 types of boost in one. I was going to get the keeley time machine but would rather get the byoc, I'm hoping it arrives tomorrow if not monday next week.

The best advice I can give is build a few BYOC kits, but as soon as you feel your skills are up to it, get off them. They're great for learning good technique when it comes to assembly and getting your confidence up. But if you want to progress further, then you really need to start building things for yourself as soon as possible. Whether on prototype board or by getting pre-made PCBs.

I can point you in the right directions for getting the parts and you'll start to build up a little parts mountain. The bigger the mountain, the cheaper it will be. Then you get to the stage where you can build a circuit for peanuts, test it and if you like it, box it. If not, you've lost very little.

There are LOADS of effects out there to go at. A horrifying amount. My mission is to build all of them :)

I would love to get to that stage, perhaps once these are built that's what I'll try. I'd love to create my own unique ones, it's good to choose the components so I see where you're coming from.

The same thing applies to brewing beer from a kit! :)

Funnily enough I just have my first beer fermenting in the other room. Made it from a malt kit, but added different fermentables, used a different yeast and I am gonna start dry hopping and adding oak chips over the weekend. If it turns out the way I want it to (and it won“t) it will be a glorious IPA to remember the Arvika Festivalen in Sweden. Should  have a generally strong character (though not that much malt) and taste of blue- and blackberrys and blackcurrant with a slight oaky background, a touch of pine and a hint of citrus and vanilla to round it up. Oh yeah and generally be hoppy as f*ck.
Yeah, I like to make things.

Anyhow, back to the subject at hand: One thing that I have found to be nice first "off" builds once you are away from kits (I only did one then started on doing other things. Then did another kit which did not work for an eternity and probably drove John nearly crazy too until it just started to work for no apperant reason) are the Ruby Amps.
These are very small solid state amps, with basecally nothing of cost on them. I have one in front of me which is 2 Elkos, 3 resistors, 3 caps, 1 IC, 1 Fet, 2 jacks, 2 pots and 1 9v battery connceted. That is the basic ruby amp and it could probably be fitted on a 2 Euro coin. Still the sound reminds one of a Marshall 45 and on my cab these things are louder then speaking volume.
Since this one is so simple and easy yet so rewarding I recommend it as a first or early build. Also you can easily mod it to vary the sounds it gives you. I have the 2 most common mods around too, one is rather Fender Bassman like and one Hiwatt esque (which is my favorite). They all just differ in like 3-4 components I think, but that gives you a great chance to learn something about how for example cap values on the in or the output effect the tone.

Also how cool is it to own a amp that you can fit in a pack of cigaretts and carry around with you and which for what it is sounds pretty bloody awesome? I think that makes for one hell of a practise amp (though for some people might be too loud for a home practise amp already).

I just mean that if you f**k up an amp it can actually kill you, where as a pedal and beer is unlikely to (though the beer can make you do things that are particularly stupid and dangerous). Loved making mine and if I had space I'd make myself others just for shites and giggles. But they do take up quite a bit of space.

yeah i mean i'm not sure i'd use a boost enough to justify just the one, but 3 pedals in one might make it worthwhile.

or better yet, building it into one of those od/boost dual pedals (assuming it'd fit) would be awesome.

See this is the beauty of it, you can fit a SHO circuit on the back of a pot and stick something else in there with it.

Fortunentally homebrewing takes a while and you usually produce beer that is the kind to enjoy, not to chug, so less danger there. Now beer and DIY electronics combined...any wishes for your tombstone?

See this is the beauty of it, you can fit a SHO circuit on the back of a pot and stick something else in there with it.
That indeed is a thing of beauty. Still enjoy the one you made, just works great in that guitar when going straight into the amp. Makes for a real workhorse.

Now I just gotta start doing those myself to add them to EVERYTHING!! SHOs EVERYWHERE!!! THE MAKE IT ALL BETTER! MUHAHAHAHA!

I have been building them both over the weekend, it's a bit less of a stage by stage update but they are both built and there have been a few problems along the way as well as good things.

The fuzz is working but I'm not sure if it's 100% right but it sounds great, certain settings on the bias are unusable but it's hilarious how heavy it gets, like your face is melting off heavy lol

The Triboost works but has a problem with the clean boost mode, the other two modes work fine but have this slight static noise, the main thing I wanted it for was to get a vintage treble boost sound and that mode works well.

Some pictures here and there will be more to follow of the completed builds!

also some sound clips to follow to show you how they sound! I'm hoping someone will know what I've done with the clean boost mode in the triboost wrong?
Title: Re: just ordered a couple BYOC pedals!
Post by: juansolo on April 24, 2013, 08:50:42 AM
It all looks good from what I can make out in the pics. For the biasing of the fuzz, I think it says aim for about 4.5v (you'll need a digital multimeter if you haven't already got one). There is actually a way of working out the correct bias, but somewhere in the region of 4-6v will probably be in the right area. Saying that, there's nothing at all stopping you just putting it where you think it sounds best.

As for the clean boost mode, without looking at the circuit, I don't know what it's doing. It the crackle when turning one of the knobs or just there all the time? Otherwise, the forum on BYOC is your friend. All the questions about the kits will have been asked before on there.

Congrats to you! those look awesome, and you've done something i've always been way too scared to try after having had confusing experiences with electronics in school..

and the fuzz sounds great too!

If i may add my experiences on biasing. as said, i know nothing about the electronics of it, however, if there's a bias know in a fuzz pedal, i tend to mark the stock setting then set it to where the pedal will just start to gate, then back it off a touch until i lose the gating and i'm getting the max gain and saturation from it. Ge fuzzes with a little more fiddling can have a nice spot where you get what what i described plus the cleanup when rolling off the volume.
