So I decided to get some new speakers as I'm getting a new band together and initially it's going to be a 4 piece. I want to sound huge. Also, I'm a nerd and want to try new things, and I'm 30 this month and fancied a crazy early birthday gift for myself... so I got some EVM12L's.

These will begin life in an X pattern with V30's in my Soldano 4x12. Eventually I'd like a hefty 2x12 and I've also got a splitter and I'm building a killswitch so I can run 2 amps and have one cut in and out if I want. This is my crazy plan. I can't wait to try these speakers.

Those are large, and very heavy! congrats, hope you like them. and good luck with the new band
-
I'm wincing just looking at those - back breakers those mofos.
-
Yikes! If they sound how they look you got some keepers for what you want. Exited to hear what you think!
-
Ha! Awesome!
And very similar to my setup, though I chose a different path...
-
Ha! you choose a different path? The left hand path? you make it sound very mystical... and I like it!
-
Awesome speakers you got there, congrats!

He took the left hand path through the forest at twilight.

nice :D

Love those EV speakers
-
I'm hoping they'll be good mixed with the V30's. I should be able to try these out tomorrow.
-
Woah, they should be awesome. Looking forward to see how you rate them with the V30's. 8)
-
How would you compare this speaker to the V30?
-
Haven't tried them yet, and sadly one is being returned.
They have a large vent down the centre of the magnet and the bottom is covered with aluminum mesh. One side of the mesh is loose on one speaker, so I've decided to return it and get one that is fixed in place 360 degrees around. So, I'll have to wait a bit longer to test both out.
-
So I stuck one of the EV's in while I'm waiting for the other to be returned. It wont leave the post office till tuesday, which is a bit annoying.
Anyway. Compared to V30, most opinions you read online are pretty much spot on. It's warmer in the low end, smoother mids and it actually has nice highs. I thought the worst case scenario would be it being a really dark speaker. I know Joe Bonamassa uses these and he doesn't have the most cutting tone in the top end. I like having the mids of the V30 mixed in there, but they do sound a bit ugly. I've never liked using complete V30 cabs no matter what manufacturer. I might be worried about using a 4x12 with only EV's fitted, but my SLO and SLO type amps kick out enough mids to maybe compensate. The single EV with 3xV30's in my cab now seems to have balanced the mids out nicely. It's a straight cab and I put the EV in the top left, so in my flat I'm guessing I hear the single V30 and the EV a lot more than the two V30's on the bottom.
In any case, I'm really happy with it and can't wait to get hold of a replacement for the other. cant wait to crank it.

My Rivera 2x12 was loaded with EVMs when I got it
Took two people to lift the cabinet and that was a struggle too.
I elected to remove and sell the EVs and replace with celestion sidewinders (my speaker of choice)
Sonically they weren't too different to the Evs at the volumes I was playing and certainly a lot more detailed mids than the G12s & Classic 30s to my ear
Weight wise they halved the weight of the cab .
Great speakers the EVs , but pretty darn heavy.
-
I didn't think the EV's were really that heavy when I took them in, but then when I had to walk one back to the post office it got annoyingly heavy rather quickly!
My cab with 4 EVM's would weight about 50kg/110lbs or thereabouts.
Sidewinders still have pretty big magnets though right?
I'm on the lookout for a 2x12. an Orange closed back PPC212 would be ideal. I'd like the 2x12 to be capable of running with a 100watt head and I'm thinking about speakers for that. I'm thinking K100's at the moment, but maybe another 2 EV's would be cool just for the novelty value! Ha!

I have three of them. I absolutely love their tone, but they're ungodly heavy. A little bit heavier than the EVs if I remember correctly. I need to get some more.

No the sidewinders are definitely lighter than the EVs , although no lightweights.
Replacing two EVs with them resulted in a cab I can move on my own (it's not pretty to watch though) compared to a cab that 2 people struggled with.
Plus point was that I sold the two EV speakers for what I paid for the cab, so it hardly cost me anything as I had the Sidewinders already

Just an update.
The EVM12L's sounded ok, but after having to send one back for a defective vent cover another has developed voice coil rob. garbage. 2 of 3 have failed.

Terrible quality control! :o
-
Hmm, I tought EV is a quality brand, but this sounds indeed terrible.
I had an EV in an Acoustic GT100 (which was a decent amp) and it sounded big for a 1x12 combo. Speaker never failed.
-
that sucks :(
-
It does indeed suck. You'd expect these things to be nails every single time.
I can get this one with the rub replaced again pretty easily. Just a pain.
It's making me think of trying some other speakers. Maybe high powered Greenback types. They seem to be the rage these days.
