Title: Weather
Post by: Dakine on March 04, 2006, 03:45:49 PM
Funny question I know but whats the weather like (south UK) right now and the long term outlook (as well as can be predicted)?

Looks like may be coming over asap as my Dad has now been admitted to hospital with kidney problems (has terminal cancer).
Darn wish these things panned out abit better. Plans to move in July but now looks like will have to leave it all up to my fiance and move back on my own sooner.

So, much to do, oh my lord.

Oh well, will know more later.

This trans atlantic living gig aint what it's cracked up to be at times.

BTW, any thoughts on bringing my Ovation with me in a Hard Case? I really wanna bring a guitar with me (will help with the stress!) but hear horror stories all the time about baggage handlers. I am positive they will NOT let me "carry" a guitar on the plane so the hold will be only option.

Thanks,
Nick

Hey, sorry to hear about your dad.

Have you tried looking up the weather online (http://uk.weather.com/index.html)?

Airlines will let you take a guitar onboard if it fits in the overhead compartment, so I'm not sure you'll get your ovation on there.  Baby Taylors fit, but not full-size guitars, usually.  Of course, the longer the flight, the bigger the plane, and the more space they have, but I still think you're out of luck.  I've travelled with guitars back and forth and not had any of them damagedin the hold yet.  Qantas sent one of them to Melbourne for a few days, but I got it back ok in the end.

Thanks Searcher,
no, not checked online yet. Basically dunno what way is up right now as am stressing. Cannot contact my mum till 7pm UK time (when she will be back from hospital).
Figured about the guitar, just another stress to worry bout baggage handlers playing football with it. Could take an electric but then would not be so good with amp here.
Anyway, will know more this afternoon. Least have hopefully sourced a hardshell (as do'nt have one) and its (apparently) not well stocked Ovation size, and it IS insured.

BTW, this is an intersting AIRLINE story by Steve Morse!

there's a cold snap through most of europe at the moment. We've had snow on and off the past few days here in northern ireland, but it's normally melted by the afternoon. It's around 4-6 celsius in the afternoons, and around freezing to -5 at night.

Sorry to hear about your dad, nick.

Thanks guys
he is doing ok (talked to my mum) and he is very dehydrated and hopefully (fingers crossed) is an infection that will/can be dealt with.
I have been told (verbal ear cuffing by mum) to hold on a flight over right now and keep concentrating on the permanent move.

I appreciate your thoughts and kind words, it is MUCH appreciated because it is hard being the only kid and so far away.

BTW, Sam boy did ya get the strings?
I just got red and black for the acoustic (which is here in my town but due to UPS being UPS will not be delivered till Monday as that is the date they qouted, go figure!).

Nick

Again, thanks, great people on this forum. And as hope Sambo can/will testify, I will be there for/help anyone of you myself if/when ever needed :)

Sam,
check out their website, have many colours.
Really funny thing (but for acoustic only it seems) they do Zebra ones, which are different wraps looking like stripes LOL

Can testify (although not on the guitar) the red ones look cool! They are a deep red but not burgundy. Like blood red so thrash playing with bleeding fingers will not discolour the strings lol.

So glad they arrived ok and ya like em Sam. Made me smile on a rather gloomy day to make ya happy :)

I hope your Dad gets stronger- tough time for you as I know from experience. It is a bit cold at the moment but supposedly warming up next week- the threatened Arctic winter has not materialised.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, I went through that a few years ago (and with my Mother now to a lesser extent), just try and keep your mind on what you have in life., it makes the other stuff a little easier to cope with.

As for weather http://www.bbc.co.uk and set the appropiate area.

Don't fly with anything less than a GOOD hard case,as the survival of guitars seems to depend on the previous nights sex quotient of the most moronic baggage handler on duty that day (multiplied by the number of airports you pass through).

To mention the coloured strings, Hanks in Denmark street carry the coloured strings.

Good luck with your dad -- my father-in-law (who's been in a wheelchair for ages) just recently got diagnosed with kidney trouble.  Doesn't need dialysis yet, but it can only be a matter of time, really.  I guess there we all go eventually, one way or another .... :?

Anyway, the weather in the UK is .... the same as always, really.  Here in East Anglia where I am, it's been dipping just down below freezing occasionally, with occasional little dustings of snow for a moment or two, but I'm from New York and Boston, and England has neither winter nor summer as far as I'm concerned!  There's just the Slightly Cooler/Much Darker season and the Slightly Warmer/Much Lighter season -- both of which are Cloudy and Wet seasons! ;)

I've been thinking about hardcases a little myself recently.  Company where myself and the missus work might be getting sold, and while I've got a reasonable chance to keep my job, she's more likely to lose hers -- and if that happens, we may well move over to Colombia where she's a proper lawyer and, with a bit of luck, she can do that while I teach English or something.  So if that happens, I've clearly got to figure out how to move my guitar and bass, and at the very least I'll want decent hardcases to drag along on a plane.  My LP's stock case (one of those with the gruesome hot pink lining!) is kind of falling apart anyway.  Even if I end up trying to FedEx the guitar or something, new cases are probably in order.  Anyone have any experience with case brands they like?

Hiscox seem to have a really good reputation.

Though the Pro musicians around here should be able to speak from experiance rather than reviews.

Thanks all.
I am keeping in contact with my mother and all is ok for now.
MAY need to fly over qucik, who knows.
Still planning on mid July at this point and Boy oh Boy is THAT still gonna be a nightmare to get to/acheive.

Cases, Carlaz, Hiscox have GOOD rep. Unfortunately can't get em easy here.
Gibson Hard Cases are actually v.good. Made by G&G in CA.
If you have multiples guitars (and having to ship and not fly them) think of a tour case. They can actually be found/built quite cheap. But then shipping should be much less fraught than flying anyway.

My main problem is a case for the Ovation (which should be here today) as it is an Odd/Unique shape, and not only that but due to sizes of back bowl, all the cases differ and have to be precise. Looks like will have to buy a new one for $89.99 ewwwww!

Guess I really should'nt worry quite so much as all my gear is insured, but still.
I think thats the MAIN advice, get ya gear insured. Have NO idea the cost in UK but mine for ALL my gear which is insured for about $10,000 replacement cost is $35 a year (but thats not professional use) but covers it worldwide. Now thats USAA for ya (Carlaz may have heard of them) and am I DAMN lucky to be with USAA. But still, insurance is ALOT cheaper than breakage and great piece of mind.

Also, my Music Man case is (should have another used one for second guitar soon) made by SKB (as are many "molded" cases).
I think they are cr@p. They have lifetime gaurantee but that does not help the guitar if they break. I will be "shipping" mine and not flying with them so not so worried.
Best case I have come across, apart from tour cases, are the G&G ones who make top end for Gibson and Fender to name but two.

These are also WELL respected;
http://www.calzonecase.com/

http://www.anvilcase.com/applications/music.html

But if you are moving country you will probably be shipping and thus a more generic hardcase should do just fine.

Holiday Music seem to stock the DR black beauties in stock, and mansons down in Devon (?) are listed as the UK stockist.

Sorry for being off topic

kool. how are you finding that there bearing up nick? like it says on the packet somewhere, mine have started to fade around where the pick strikes the strings but this looks pretty cool with my distressed pup cover and raw looking guitar in general.... i reckon it could be annoying though if youve got a sleek looking axe....

LOVE mine.
No wear thus far really, and by now D'Adarrio,Ernie Ball,GHS would be rusty to HELL where I fret on the neck.

Will post some red on flame "drool" pics for ya whenever darn UPS gets here :)

I am NOT using any other string till find one better than these, and have tried all above thus far.

Elixir Nanoweb I am told are good but saw a guys the other day and the coating wears off after awhile where the pick hits strings (they have micro plastic coating). Also, they feel too slick for me.

I Like DR's and till shown/hear of summit better they are my choice, colour wear or not.

yer im sticking with the DR's from now on too... love them. even if they werent anything special sound wise id probably just get them for the aesthetics lol!. surprised that youve had no colour wear though. maybe i just pick harder  :P

Due to concentrating on alternate picking etc. you may indeed hold and pick harder LOL

I use Dunlop picks (tortex, nuffin special) but no wear yet.

lol i think its a combination of heavy guage picks, really heavey music in band songs recently and more practice than usual.
