Title: Pickups too high? Pole pieces too long. Shorter ones a possibility?
Post by: Bob Gnarly on May 09, 2013, 08:16:06 PM
Just had a set of Cold Sweats installed in my Ibanez PGM301.
The 301 has the p/ups screwed directly into the routing hole (i.e. no surrounds)
The (short legged) BKP's have longer legs than the pickups they replaced resulting in a very high (I think) pickup position relative to the strings but no way of lowering them.
Realise now it is the pole pieces that is preventing further lowering. Are shorter ones available?

Requires woodwork......drilling or routing
Sorry but it's true

Make the legs shorter?

OK, probably should have opened her up before posting. It's actually the ploe pieces that are stopping the pickup going down any further.
So my new question is, are shorter pole pieces available? Mine are 21mm (total)

You could cut the pole pieces down to size but this will change the sound of the pickup. You could also get the pickup with double slug poles but again this will change the sound.

I think your best bet would be to drill holes into the guitar or route a small channel where the poles would normally rest to give you the bit of space that you need.

Also you could shim your neck and raise your bridge/saddles up which would be less destructive

Thanks, I'll give Tim a bell tomorrow and see what he suggests.
