Title: Best P90s sized humbuckers for extreme metal?
Post by: serch777 on May 14, 2013, 01:15:11 AM
Hi everyone, nice to post at this nice forum  :)

I'm planing to get a Gibson SG Junior 60's, which only has a single P-90 in the bridge position. I love the guitar, and I've been wanting a single-pickup Gibson for a long time. The problem is, I would use it for an extreme metal project and P-90s don't really suit the style, and I don't want to reroute the guitar to fit a standard-sized humbucker in it. I wonder if the Stockholm of the Pig 90 would suit my requirements. Is there P90 version of the Aftermath? Cheers!

P.D. I'm looking for something with a tight low end (I plan to play in B standard) and aggresive mids, as I use a lot of tremolo picking and fast downstroking.

I'm confused, if you want humbucker SIZED P90's but want humbucker tone, why not just go with a humbucker? If your guitar is P90 routed you would want a Super massive P90 not the Stockholm.

Normally if you ask nicely BK will do their P90s in HB size and vice versa.
As you correctly assumed, your choice comes down to the Pig90 and the Stockholm. The Supermassive might work on the count that it is brighter, but I think it looses with the rest of things.
Question now is how extreme you wanne go. My understanding is that the p90 is somewhat more extreme than the SH on all counts. I think your biggest concern should be the amount of low end you get, as all these PUs will deliver quite a bit of that (fat p90s really are fat, but defined, love it). If you would want to go full extreme you could ask BK if they would make you a Ceramic Pig90 (dunno how the chances on those are these days, but they are a lot better than on most other custom stuff), which should definetly be tight enough, though to be fair, the others would be too.

Generally I think you should shoot them a question and if they donīt mention a C-Pig90 themselfs you can maybe nicely throw the thought in there and see if they feel it might work and are willing to do it.

Thanks for the replies guys! PartyAnimal, I would put a humbucker but that would require rerouting the guitar, drilling into the cavities and that stuff, and I just don't wanna mess it up. A ceramic Pig90 sounds very interesting indeed Kiichi. I guess I will ask the guys at BK for their opinion :D

I was also a bit confused by your post title, seemed like you were looking for a P90 which is the size of a humbucker ;)

In fact it seems like you were after a very hot p90! ;)
