Title: Pickups for a semi hollow tele shaped guitar
Post by: ElectricTurkey4369 on May 18, 2013, 08:14:29 PM
I have a Carvin SH60 with a semi-hollow mahogany body and neck-through walnut neck. This guitar is primarily tuned down to D standard/drop C most of the time and I'm looking for a pickup that will help the guitar sound a bit more articulate and well balanced... I don't want anything super high output or ceramic, so I was thinking mules.
I play mostly metal, but also a lot of jazz fusion. I like my distortion sound to be almost "purry" and well articulated, like in this Gojira song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rhMnv2nKcw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rhMnv2nKcw)  (around 0:24).
Right now the stock pickups are alnico V and I like how they feel, however they're a bit fizzy and don't have enough articulation.
I'm really leaning towards trying some lower output pickups since my Axe Fx can pretty much supply as much gain as I want... Any suggestions?

Mules are versatile, open, sweet yet crisp and amazingly tight for a PAF59-copy. I use mine for maximum hardrock, but our honorable moderator Nolly recorded some metal-tracks with Mules and they sounded superb.

Hearing those tracks from Nolly is what made me consider Mules in the first place!

I'm thinking Mules may be the ticket... although I wanna hear what others have to say!

Mules can work for such things as has been shown many times, but while they generally also fit nicely in semihollows, I dunno how well they would do their metal thing there. Might be good to get something with more grunt and thickness in there I think.
