Title: Crunch Amp Comparison - Friedman/Cornford/Marshall and a TorpedoLive
Post by: hunter on May 28, 2013, 10:52:14 AM
Here's a vid I did today to showcase the different tones of my 3 amps, as well as the Torpedo Live.

In my own opinion all 3 sound great, but it's a matter of taste. Love how easy these clips are when using the Torpedo, what a great unit!

Guitar: Tyler BW90
Signal chain: Guitar > RadialBuffer >[Pedal] >Amp >SpeakerOut to TorpedoLive >LineOut to AudioInterface >Logic MAC
[Pedal] on Friedman: Xotic EP Boost
[Pedal] on Cornford: None
[Pedal] on Marshall: Fulltone OCD

Enjoy, comments more than welcome!

Hint: There's the video with more of a "real life" mix, guitars embedded like on a studio record. Then below the soundcloud links, where the guitars are mixed louder, to make the distinction easier, too.

Wow, I like all 3 and could happily go with any of them. I'm curious as to why you have used pedals with the Friedman and Marshall but not the Cornford? I would have liked to hear all 3 on their own without pedals.

It's just the way I use these amps. The more gainy HBE side of the Friedman is too smooth for my tastes and I prefer the BE, for more gain with a boost from the EP or the OCD. The Marshall doesn't deliver enough gain, or if I push the volume and gain side to max it gets internal feedback. Probably someone should look after it. The Mk50 has enough gain and stays brutal in the higher gain channel. Unfortunately it has loop suck and no cleans.

Personally and from the way it feels when played, the Friedman is my favourite. But they are all very good amps indeed.

Friedman + EP Booster = Epic Win as far as I'm concerned. I can see how the Cornford could be easier to fit into a mix, but it doesn't have that lovely grainy low-mid roar and punch.

Nice playing as usual (man I whish I had you fingers), too bad you didn't publish to whole song...

To be honest the Friedman is my favourite too. As you probably recall, I too have an old MK50 that I really like.... I just haven't the funds to get the Friedman! Every time I start to get some decent savings together something else crops up, and now it's the central heating boiler! Lol

Friedman and Cornforn were my favourites, with Friedman getting a close win. It has slightly more clarity and punch in the lows and and low mids, while having a defined attack and great presence. Marshall felt a bit fuzzy compared to the other two.

But for some different application, Cornford could get the win :) Thanks for the clips!

they are all cool, that is right!  8)

(but, for me, the Marshall stands out the most)

Friedman sounded best.

I think the Cornford wasn't set with quite enough gain, sounded a bit underpowered and lost in the mix.

The JMP sounded TOO gainy though, just by a hair.

I prefered the cornford, it also sounded much better on the soundcloud mix than the youtube compressed version.

Marshall all the way.

Are you plugging the speaker outputs from the amps into a the torpedo then back to the cab and processing the signals with the torpedo with the speaker sims or is it your preamp output into the torpedo only? the unit looks interesting if that is the case.

my current setup allows me to take the speaker output  of my tube amp into a DI and then into the computer for IR processing. the speaker output is then linked straight back to the cabinet so essentially it just branches out at the DI. works like a charm, but it's definitely not a hassle free setup and even less a portable setup!

I had done something similar like you before. This is different. The speaker out of the amp goes into the Torpedo Live, which has a reactive dummy load, so no speaker needed. This is completely silent and the amp is cranked. Line Out from Torpedo goes to my studio mixer/monitors.

You have the choice to connect a guitar cab to the speaker through on the Torpedo, then the internal load is deactivated and you can use both, the cab sims and the real cab.

oh nice! so basically it's pretty much my current setup but without the need for a speaker if i record at my apartment. from what i read it can handle 100W RMS so i figure it'll work well for most 50 watters, would you risk a 100 watt amp in there (of course not fully dimed but at gigging volumes)

I had that Marshall on 8, so I guess it put out already more than 100W. I think their load can cope with a 100 Watter no matter what.
