Title: Pickup suggestions: Gibson Les Paul Studio Deluxe
Post by: zep89 on May 31, 2013, 08:00:22 PM
Hi guys,

Another request for pickup suggestions:

I have a 2012 Gibson Les Paul Studio Deluxe. Stats are found here:
http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-USA/Les-Paul-Studio-Deluxe-60s-Exclusive.aspx (http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-USA/Les-Paul-Studio-Deluxe-60s-Exclusive.aspx)

(Despite the "Studio" label, it is a solid-body guitar, not chambered.)

Body: Mahogany with maple top
Neck: Mahogany
Fretboard: Baked maple

I strive to play classic rock and early metal, say 1968-1983. Zeppelin, Sabbath, Rush, James Gang, Metallica. I really like the sound of the Rebel Yell, but have read that it can be bright. I really want a fat, warm sound that sounds good distorted. Nothing too agressive, but not too vintage either. Are there any other pickups & pickup combinations that I should consider?

Thanks.  :D

I'd be tempted to say Holydiver as a very versatile, warm and fat option. If you want something more vintage, perhaps the Black Dog.

Job for the Black Dog (enhanced mids). Does heavier styles very well, but still open PAF-tones for Led Zep.

Thanks guys.

Is a Mule in the neck a good match with a Black Dog in the bridge?

Hell yeah! There are several forummembers who have this combo.

I am getting a bit peeved with the BD in my Tokai LP. Mids are huge, maybe to much. It's paired with a Riff Raff neck, which is pretty bright compared to the BD.

Those are fairly diverse-sounding bands!

I think P-90s are good for James Gang tones, but on the whole I'm not arguing with the Black Dog suggestion.  Definitely not Rebel Yells!

Yeah, that's true. Although for Metallica, I really only meant their early days (1983, pre-EMG for them). Basically I'm looking for a good hard rock/early metal sound.

For James Gang, this is the sound I meant. Huge wall of sound!
