Title: Pickups for Heritage H157.
Post by: gorgephil on June 05, 2013, 10:25:41 AM
I'm finally getting in the market for pickups for my Heritage H157, which is more or less equivalent with a custom shop Les Paul. My current pickups, HRW's, feel too vintage voiced. I'd like to find something for high gain applications that has tight, focused but still big low end and mid-range cut. I play in a progressive metal/hardcore band, but we don't go all out with gain on 11. I'm looking for an aggressive sound with clarity. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome.

Progressive metal and hardcore, with tight but very noticable low end and cut, with a agression and clarity very much sounds like a Alnico Nailbomb to me. Ceramic if you prefer that character.

Pair that with a Cold Sweat neck for good measure and you should be home free.

I suggest to check out the Miracle Man en the ceramic Nailbomb. They have the voicing you're looking for. I don't own these pickups myself, but there are lots of users here on the forum en some will probably chime in.

I would broadly agree with both of these suggestions. The Miracle Man has a big bottom end and cutting highs. It's a reasonably aggressive pickup with plenty tightness while retaining a warm and surprisingly organic smoothness. The only Nailbomb I've tried is the alnico version which, surprisingly, was a LOT more aggressive than the Miracle Man and a LOT tighter too with an EQ that was a bit more balanced. It was too much in my guitar but i can imagine it working well in a Les Paul.

Pretty much sounds like you are describing Painkillers to me.

I kind of posted this and then bailed from the thread, but thanks for the help everyone. Still not sure what I'm going to go with yet but your responses have helped out!

You can't go really wrong with a Miracle Man or a (a little more agressive) Nalilbomb.
