Orville by Gibson Les Paul > M-audio Firewire Solo > Guitar Rig
Very basic clip, don't know if anyone is interested in this pickup, but it has quite a sweet tone, especially on the higher strings. 'Scuse the recording, I'm new to it :D I would have done it with my microphone as it sounds a lot better through a tube amp, but I'm having problems with mic recording at the moment (apparently ShureSM57's leave out a lot of frequencies that make good recording tone :)
I kept it to open chords to give a clearer idea of the overall tone of the pickup. Its in the neck pickup

I think you forgot to post the actual clip
-
:D Just for the record we all want to hear clips of Riff Raffs
:D 8)
-
im guessing it was the wrong file extension- this used to happen to me- i would post talking about an attachment and i wouldnt even realise that it had rejected the file i thought id attached.
-
I have been dying to hear clean riff raff clips for the last 6 months. Please post them. I am very intrested in buying this pickup but want to hear it first.
-
Bummer sorry guys, I'll give it another shot!
-
I think that worked, not the best recording in the world, I'm just getting the hang of it. Its into guitar rig, mic recording is at a standstill at the moment; I thought SM57 was good for home recording...it isnt :)
-
lurrrrrrvly tone- nice one mate.
-
Thanks :)
If you guys need any more clips with the riff raff, I'd be happy to oblige, I'll even use guitar rig (one and two) patches that you send me if you like.

why??? arent they exactly what's used in pretty much every mic'd amp situation ever? should sound nice, no?
-
ooo i like the clean tone - jangles nicely, clips nicely too!
-
:D That`s a great little demo mate !
Those Riff Raffs sound great. Can you do a demo of them with a semi Cruchy type sound ? & Do you have a set or is it just a bridge P/U
:D 8)
-
I would be intrested in hearing the neck pup alone, the bridge pup alone and then the two together. I'm guessing that first clip was the neck pup.
thanks alot!

I think they sound great- thanks for the clip. Jangle city, Janglesville.

I'm running it into a M-audio firewire solo and it just dosnt sound good at all, I'm quite dissapointed. If you go to http://www.soundclick.com/williamthorpe and listen to 'Demo 01 (without midrange)' you will see what I mean. Just sounds fuzzy and cr@p :(
By the way, the demo was done with an Anderson H3, great bridge pickup that fits well with the Riff Raff.

Unfortunately I've only got one in the neck, theres an Anderson H3 in the bridge, but I'll do a crunch clip if you like. Any preferances for guitar rig? Amps/tone settings/riffs to play while doing it?
Thanks for the complements guys :D

Try to make the crunchy sound sweet and clear (I know crunch and clear are different) but you get what I mean.
-
This what you mean? Or less crunch? Just a little AC/DC demo - you shook me all night long because I remember ages ago someone saying they wanted one. Sorry about the solo, kinda fooked up a lot, couldnt be bothered to do it again ;)
-
exactly what I was talking about. I love that tone! Just can't wait till Tim puts his clips (108 or something) on the Bkp site so I can check out the bridge.
Great job!

Where are you placing the mic? What amp? What amp settings? How is the room setup around the speaker?
There are huge amounts of variables in play there, but the SM57 has been used on practically every classic rock/metal album in the last 20-odd years. There's nothing wrong with the mic. I've got perfectly good results recording at home with one.
Oh, and it sounds like you may have left your computer monitor on when you were recording, sounds like there's lots of noise through your pickups that can be caused by inteference from a CRT.

Great stuff - Given its a riff raff I wouldn't mind hearing a crunchy tune through a plexi patch (i.e. ANGUS :band5: )

The monitor is off when I record. I'm running a Les Paul into a DSL 401 amp settings: Mid: 2 o'clock ish Treb: 12 o'clock Bass 1 o'clock ish Gain: 10o'clock downwards, I usually have it higher, but it sounded worse.
I'm running the sm57 into a whurlwind xlr cable into an m-audio firewire solo > Audacity.
I just feel it sounds really really 'grainy' or 'tinny' nothing smooth or crunchy about it with the microphone. I usually have it off centre of the middle of the speaker with about 2 inches away from the grille, any sugestions? Thanks for the help :)
Edit: the monitor was probably on listening to that, whoops :)

There is a Plexi model on guitar rig, any prefered settings? Distortion pedal in front or not?
-
The things you have to remeber about recording with an SM 57 is that it is usually blended with another mic. I agree, im not a huge fan of the SM 57 on guitars, i prefer consender mics like a Neumann ( yeah about a £700 difference ) and this is why i record with a Pod XT.
Also if you cant turn the amp loud enough there is no point in recording with a 57.

Recording stuff snipped
I've created a new topic in the Tech section to reply to this, it seems to be going a bit off-topic for the players section I think.
