Hi everyone; I was gonna get a Gibson SG Junior, but I ended up getting a used standard; needless to say, I'm very happy about making that choice. The thing is, that middle output pickups has never been my thing as I play extreme metal almost exclusively. I've heard great things about both NB and MM for this style of music. What do you guys think is better suited for old school/gothenburg swedish death metal? (Entombed, At the Gates, Dissection, Dark Tranquillity, Bloodbath, etc.) Some people say the MM sound almost the same as the EMG 81/85 set, I already have these on other guitar, so I would like a slightly different type of sound. Have anyone here that plays the same style tried both sets? I'm looking for a lot of note definition and something that will handle tight fast picking attack with pinch harmonics all over the place, clarity in low tunings is a must. Cheers guys! PDT_019

My guess would be Nailbomb. I have heard it mentioned before when it comes to the likes of In Flames (newer and older stuff) and also other melodic and gothemburg metal types.
Should definetly have the agression you need for At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity.

I have a Nailbomb in an SG Standard. It is the alnico version.
I guess it depends on what your style. You may want to consider the ceramic magnet, or else the MM set. The alnico Nailbomb to my ears in the SG has quite a punkish edge to it. This may or may not be what you are looking for (melodic death metal sounds a long way from punk to me). For example I can imagine Shane Embury picking up my SG and thinking that it would be great for Venomous Concept. It has a bit of a chainsaw quality to it, and I certainly wouldn't call it smooth. I tend to think of melodic death metal as heavy but smooth compared to grindcore, crust punk, etc. Others might have a different viewpoint on this.
You might even want to consider the Cold Sweat set, as it works well in SGs (I have the neck pickup in mine) and will give a more 'scooped' sound if that's what you want (same with the C-Bomb and MM). You should find the neck pickup in that set very good for leads.

Thanks for the answers guys! I'm intrigued by the a-bombs, is that "chainsaw" sound like the old swedish death metal guitar tone? Here's an example of what I'm talking about: http://youtu.be/L0ZCAarIVSI (http://youtu.be/L0ZCAarIVSI)

Since that is rather bright in a way it reminds me of Rebell Yells (underwound brighter nailbombs) and Painkillers too.
So after throwing those names in the ring too I canīt offer any further help I am afraid.

Thanks Kiichi; well, I've been watching some clips of the MM, and it sounds closer to the sound I'm looking for. I would like to hear the ceramic Nailbombs though, before making a final decision .

The OP on this thread has a MM set. He also might be willing to change them...hint..hint.

That 'Sunlight sound' came largely from the amp.
If you want that sound any half decent humbucker guitar will do it as the distortion level is so high. Actually too high an output on the pickup might even mix things up.
What you basically need to do is play like a pretty good 16 year old through a 65W Peavey Bandit with everything dimed on the Bandit and an old Boss HM-2 pedal dimed out.
Look anywhere on the web and you'll find out that's how Entombed got that sound on Left Hand Path. Makes sense. The rest of it would be how it was recorded and mixed in the studio

BKP can put that on the website if they like. I think though that it probably sounds more like that in an SG than in other guitars

I put that example because the guys were talking about a "chainsaw" sound. I'm looking for a better tone, but still very heavy. Like Bloodbath:

I get my chainsaw from my HM-2 into a 30 watt Marshall. No distortion on the pedal but the rest set max and let the amp do the distortion. The guitars I use have an EMG 81 or SD Blackout in my 7 string. I don't have to run much gain on the amp as the actives push pretty hard on max volume. I haven't tried it on any BKP but I am getting an a-bomb for my strat so I might at some point block the trem and go heavy strings out of curiosity.

100% Miracle Man on those bands. Had the Miracle Man in my SG first. Don't go with the Nailbomb, it's a great pickup but different (I have the Alnico one). The Nailbomb is more something that I would use for later Sepultura, although in my book it is the Dream Theater pickup - very thick in the midrange.

Miracle Man definitely.

Thanks a lot for the kind replies guys! I'll probably get the Miracle Man set, as I think they are suited better for the tone I want to achieve.

Yes, it would be perfect for Chaos A.D. era Sepultura. It's also well suited to all kinds of hardcore music. I find that I have to spend a lot of time fiddling with the pots to get other sounds out of it. The Miracle Man seems like a much more 'metal' pickup. You can also do Ramones songs quite well, but they don't come out like the originals, but more like the hardcore covers of them by RDP etc. I imagine the C-Bomb to be somewhere in between.
In saying this I don't mean to imply that the A-bomb is not 'versatile', just that in my experience (in the SG at least) it is not as versatile as claimed. It is versatile in the sense that it is good for all kinds of hardcore and punk (I haven't tuned down with it yet so not sure how good it is with grindcore), and can play some pretty mean punkish versions of AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, Guns and Roses, etc too. You can play Sabbath etc on it if you roll back the pots some but the closer you get to 10 on the pots the more hardcore punk it sounds. To the extent that '90s metal had that influence too you can get those sounds from it easily. It wouldn't be the most natural choice for something like a Chuck Schuldiner sound though.

Alot of the bands that used sunlight back in the days used Entombed V-5 pickups that were in most of the Ibanez guitars back in the mid-late 80s. (Ibanez DT-350,etc)
Ive actually tried these pickups with an HM-2 using the original amp entombed recorded left hand path with, it sounded quite mushy and undefined. I noticed the sound was alot clearer and meatier with low-gain pickups.
The pickups that were used were by no stretch of the imagination quality
alot of the sound came from the amp and mixing, pretty much, analog equipment, saturation and so forth. I think youll be good with anything, my ceramic warpig gives a heavy bite too it with yet alot of definition and clarity. ever considered those?
