Title: NPD! GET TO DA PEDALS!
Post by: Lew on July 12, 2013, 01:19:05 PM
So I figured this deserves it's own thread, really 'cause Juan is a stud and makes brilliant pedals (as y'all know). I'm building a pedal board at the moment and for some reason I figured it should be all about the greatest living actor :-p

Get your ass to mars (Skreddy ? lady/ Ultrastoner)

6th Delay (ger it?)

Terminator (Cherrybomb/ Coloursound Overdriver)

I've got a King Conan/ Dr.Boogie coming in a few weeks :-D

That's the gain and delay sorted, think a phaser or trem should be next

Needs more "Jingle all the way" if you ask me!

Sides that cool stuff, but missing some key Arnie moments! ;)

I don't know how Juan's pedals sound (I guess they're good since a lot of members here have them), but the looks are certainly brilliant.

Thing is, it's kinda hard to find hi-res Arnie pics. These were taken from the Arnie calander John has next to his bed. Yea, gonna want a few more pedals so lot's of room for more Arnies, may as well carry on at this point :-p

I wanted to use this one for the Boogie, but couldn't find a version of it that was sharp enough:

Also I wouldn't mind redecalling the Recall one at some point. That was when my printer was going through it's red phase so it's not as good as it should be... Though it's fecked at the moment and I need a new one so nothing's happening at the moment decal-wise.

Still not high enough res really for it to come out well enough. A grab from a BD might get close to be fair with a bit of upscaling. But I've found a better one (in terms of fit) anyhow to use.

Sounds good.  A quick question: what are these pedals like in terms of the mA draw?  You have a lot of pedals so I am wondering how you power them all on your board, whether some of them are daisy-chained, others have their own dedicated outlet, etc?

One of these. It's 3A so plenty of power http://www.diago.co.uk/pedal-power/diago-powerstation.html (http://www.diago.co.uk/pedal-power/diago-powerstation.html)  8)

Hmm. I've never seen those mentioned before.  Looks like a good unit, and cheaper than my T-Rex Chameleon.  You can get them in Australia too. http://bmusic.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_60_65&products_id=3928 (http://bmusic.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_60_65&products_id=3928)

Not sure I'd pay that for it! Cost me £30 used, they're £60 odd new. It's silent and tiny which is nice.
Title: Re: NPD! GET TO DA PEDALS!

Most pedals draw very little, less than 50mA. Delays and reverbs tend to pull quite a bit 60-100mA is not uncommon. Some of the multi-effects I've done have pulled up to 250mA. So you can get away with quite a lot on a 3A PSU like the Diago / Shredfreak. The only downside is that it doesn't have isolated outs for when you have pedals that aren't keen on mixing with others.

Yeah $140 is a piss take. Shame that Johnny Shredfreak has stopped doing them. Same supply for about £25 IIRC.

I have a T-Rex Fuel Tank Chameleon that cost $215. It has three isolated 9V/300mA outputs that can be switched to 12V/225mA, one isolated 9V/300mA that can be switched to 18V/150mA, and two outputs that cannot be used at the same time, one is 12VAC/300mA, while the other is the same as the first three outputs.  It can be switched from 115V to 230V.

There's a lot of things I like about the Diago unit, except for the fact that it is not isolated.

What's the benefit of isolated v daisy?

The only downside is that it doesn't have isolated outs for when you have pedals that aren't keen on mixing with others.

edit: so what doesn't like mixing with what? It's like pedal apartheid?

Some pedals don't play well with others. Positive ground stuff particularly won't work at all with regular pedals (unless you sort it out internally in the pedal). Also it prevents any sort of interference on the power lines between pedals. Multiple charge pumps on the same supply can sometimes cause heterodyning for example. You'd know if you had an issue with that though.

Do you have a negative->positive adapter like T-Rex sells to adapt their units for certain relays?

Hey Juan, any plans to make something similar to this?  Or do you already have one?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soXdVpcr2d4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soXdVpcr2d4)

To me this looks like two Mudhoneys in one box.  Both sides seem to be exactly the same, but obviously you can set them up differently for different sounds.  I like the basic circuit though

Easier to make a little voltage inverter that gives you -9v and fit it internally. It's only 3 parts and it can then play nice with other pedals. You can see it here (http://juansolo.demon.co.uk/stompage/images/minifrank-i.jpg) on this tiny Fuzz Face. I assume the adapter does the same thing.

A quick read on FSB and it turns out it's a pair of Rat's in a box ;) (with an extra bit of boost). I haven't made any double distortions really. There are a few out there, but I've never really felt the urge. Easy enough to do though.

I feel that Commando marks the halfway point between the good ones (Terminator, Total Recall, Conan the Barbarian & Predator) and the bad ones (Raw Deal, Red Heat, Conan the Destroyer, etc)... It can only go down hill from here! ;)

Raw Deal I think might be his worst film. The dialogue and quips are so bad they leave you scratching your head or laughing involuntarily. Of course I've seen them all so much when I was younger I can actually quote them, which is slightly upsetting.

Red Heat is not quite as bad (and was on telly last night and I sat through at least half of it). Commando though still has charm and humour hence not in the 'actually bad' bad batch.

Dear god Red Sonja... I think that's one of the very few films I couldn't make it all the way through.
