Eyup, so I got a new job. I've taken a paycut 'cause it's only 120hrs a month and a bit less pay but I've taken it because it's a better job, it has room to move up the system leading to more money than I'm currently on and it's secure where as my current job is what it is and it could end at anytime, really.
So, here's the daft question, how is it working normal office hours? I'm a little apprehensive as I've never worked office hours and I'm used to working 12hr days but only a few days at a time before some rest. I'm guessing it's going to take a while to get used to and have the discipline to wake up every day. The new job is 9:30-3:30 mon-fri so it's hardly taxing so on paper I'll have lots of free time (albeit in the evenings and weekends rather than straight days off in the week). Too much time, actually as it's a good 45-50 hours less actual work a month plus I get things like bank holidays and a couple of weeks at xmas off. I'm hoping to find a part time job for a few evenings a week, which I hope is realistic?
-
Congratulations!! :D
I'm working 9.30 to 7pm usually, plus a fair amount unpaid overtime whenever needed. 25 days a year holiday, which I do make a point of taking.
So basically, your 9.30 to 3.30 sounds great to me ;) You might be able to squeeze in a bit of part-time work, but don't let it impact your main job, and also avoid telling them if you can since it might create a bad impression.
-
Sounds alright, but what's your travelling time like? That can eat up big chunks of your "free" time.

Cheers :)
Too late Gwem but they seemed cool with it, in-fact they appreciated that I was taking a cut in pay and offered me to work only 4 days with them and 1 in the other job to boost my wages, which I said no to because I wanted to look committed to them but it showed that they were flexible and understanding.
10min walk Philly :)

10min walk Philly :)
Excellent! :D
That would be great, although I must say (living and working in London) I would prefer to live 10 mins from where I work rather than work 10 mins from where I live, if you see what I mean.

No, not one bit  isn't that the same thing?

No, completely different!
What I mean is: if I was only a 10 min walk away, I would rather live in the area I work (central London) than work in the area I live (shitety south London)! :P

Office hours = go out every weekend and dance like a muppet, grant most of my friends who do this drink far too much get a hangover then waste half their weekend recovering
Gym is always busy when everyone's finished for the day, especially on a Monday when it's international chest day, luckily I live 5 minutes from the gym so I just go later on
-
Ah, I see Philly :) but you have Feline and Boris Johnson, it can't be all bad :D
mmmmm the gym and dancing, different worlds JDC, different worlds

Feline = Good
Croydon = Bad
(no offence, Jonathan!)
No comment about Boris, except I will repeat my not-so-fascinating fact that he and I were born on exactly the same day. How differently our lives have turned out!

I can also do the moonwalk while bashing out some thrashy metal riffs

urgh Boris. I saw him on his bike recently and I've bumped into him in work before. He's quite small and round for all the cycling he does, not that this would impact his height.
I work shifts... I'm worried about going to 9-5 should that ever have to happen. I think I'd loose my mind. 3 days in work in a row is just about enough before I start to think about destroying humanity.

Lots of business dinners and lunches in the world of politics, I guess.
I didn't realise how relatively short he is until I saw that pro-celebrity tennis match with Andy Murray, Tim Henman, Jonathan Ross etc a few weeks ago. Before that I'd always been under the impression he was a big - and tall - lummox.
(He's still a good few inches taller than me, though)

Congrats on the new job-- I switched from a job which had a lot of travel, where often the work would be daft hours and not 'office' at all, but I moved back to a previous job in November which is office hours, and I find it really boring compared to before... I think i'm just not cut for office hours. Granted if it was better money then it'd be more tolerable, but as it stands i'm looking to move already. Your situation sounds really good though, congrats again!)
(if anyone knows of a job for a broadcast/studio technician, then let me now ;) )

I did the same thing you did. Worked shifts all my life then changed job to a 9-5 (well 8-4). It's weird... Everything is busy, you're aware that there are people around considered to be important who are at best clueless or at worst $%&#ing idiots (and your bosses). You seem to have no holidays and weekends will seem incredibly short. On top of that you'll have a shiteeload less money and outside work will now seem really crowded with all the other plebs trying to get stuff done on evenings and weekends.
Shifts have a lot going for them. However I just got to the stage where I was starting to struggle with them and I wanted to take my career somewhere else. Took a massive pay cut and went for it. Worked for a good while too netting me a job I enjoyed and eventually a lot more money than the shift work.
Then the management changed and it went to shitee. C'est la vie.
In other words, who knows? But you'll never know if you don't try.

Oli, I know ADI up in Preston are hiring broadcast technicians, I've applied for the junior position!
I work shifts at the minute and not really happy with them. Good when they work in your favour and free time in the week is nice, but more often than not they ruin your social life!
-
Urgh Preston.
What about Media City in Salford (not that salford is nice but at least its close to manchester which is nicer than preston). There usually engineering jobs in London. Globecast, Discovery Channel, Arqiva, BBC. I generally look on Caspian One, Christy Media, Venator Recruitment, Grapevine Jobs.
What I've learned though, is that most companies are garbage past the 'shop floor' level, so you're unlikely to be able to do a good job at any of these places let alone make any changes to help yourself do a better job. These people should be telling YOU why you should sell your time to THEM. Scumbags.

What I'm going to miss the most is the week days off where I can get appointments/shopping etc done without any problem and have three full days off in a row, that's gonna hurt. As it is I can pretty much have a run of 8days off every 7/8 weeks which is nice. Working 9-9 is no fun when you have a few days to run, you just work, eat and sleep, looking at Facebook when I'm on the loo feels like a treat
On the other hand I'm finishing at 3.30 with the new job and the work is 5mins from town so plenty of time to get stuff done. I'm at the top of my tree where I am and the literally is nowhere to go and I'm sick of my job.
Something I thought was really positive with the new job is that people have been working there 10+years where as 12mths where I am now and you're considered a veteran. Oh, yea and I'll be able to get sick pay, which would have been nice last year when I had to have a forced 4 weeks off unpaid due to a collapsed lung.
Time will tell!

Which is why you tend to socialise with your shift. If you get a bad one it can be pretty bad. With a good group it can be brilliant.

I'm luckily enough to be on shift with good people. It's the main thing that keeps me here, that and the fact I probably couldn't get a job anywhere else. I've done 9-5 though with people I didn't like and that was RUBBISH and I still didn't socialise that much outside of work either.

We don't actually have shift teams, we have no set pattern just rostered on as and when they want us over a monthly roster. Makes it really hard/annoying to plan anything in advance as you have to always check with the supervisors and book time off over a month in advance!
