Title: 8 String Pickup Recommendation.
Post by: Robert W on July 25, 2013, 06:00:29 PM
I might be acquiring an 8 string in the near future and would like to get some possible pickup recommendations, if I could. Mostly I'm using guitar sims, so I don't know how much that will affect  things, but I'm playing with a lot of gain, playing mostly doom stuff a la Sab's Master Of Reality. Also, I've tried a BK Warpig ceramic in a 7 string before and don't think it was the pup for me. I do hear that the Cold Sweats are good pups for 8 strings though.

Any thoughts?

Anything with a controlled low end can be good. Pickups with an emphasis on the midrange can help balance the longer scale lengths, a bright midrange tone can be good for a defined low string. I think there's a little more flexibility in what can work on an 8 string than some people might lead you to think.

I've heard good things about the Cold Sweat for 8 strings but I've never tried it myself. I'm sure if that's the kind of tone you want generally it'll work out.
