It is like the name St John pronounced Sinjin or Sian pronounced Sharn or Xcjjg pronounced Pete ( well I made that last one up). My youngest son lives in Ireland( why is it that both of my sons live in different countries to me- was I that bad a father?) and he can decipher Gaelic and did explain it all to me once. It sounds nice when he says it and is a poetic language by the sounds of things.

The elder one lives in Columbus Ohio, USA. Excellent pianist and wonderful singer and writes great songs but doesn't care for the music business much.

yes that is him Sambo. He is not playing at the moment as he can't afford a decent keyboard but if I can get him one I'd love to as he could earn himself good money. He had a great band when he lived here and used to go down a storm wherever he played but he did not like the cr@p that comes with it.

you fu c kwit, siobhan is an irish name.

Chevaun is an anglicisation because it's easier to pronounce when it's spelt phonetically.

Why didn't the irish spell it rightly the first time? Seriously, being irish is no excuse for poor spelling...or is it?

bh in irish = v. Much like ph in english = f. It's very simple. The irish also have a habit of throwing in random vowels that don't do anything to how the word is pronounced, you get used to it after a while ( i don't speak any irish, by the way, this is as far as i can tell, lol).

and wtf does that g do in "through"? they don't look remotely the same.

another example: lieutenant is pronounced leftenant, unless you're american. that's as messed up as any irish word i've seen. english is one of the hardest languages to learn if it isn't your first language.

Siobhan is phonetic.  It's just not phonetic English.  Happens all the time, you know.  The name Bella is pronounced Bay-Uh in Spanish, because that's how they say double Ls.

Yeah, I know: I'm being serious again.  I studied linguistics at university.

exactly. I don't even speak irish. I was just pointing out to indy that what he was saying about irish could apply equally to english- even worse perhaps, since because english is an amalgamation of latin/french/german/friesian/anglo-saxon/viking etc, there's no real true phonetic spelling in it- most words take their phonetics from the original language from which the word came. Irish looks daft, but if you studied it, it'd make sense (ditto german/french/whatever), unlike english. English is my first language, and most of the time I'm going "OMGWTF, why the hell  has "demesne" got an "s" in it?" etc. (it's from french presumably).

I wint to school with a few wierdly named people

Kitchner Coote, Lancalot Rock (I kid you not), Phil McCann (sounds like Fill my can), and a guy whose middle name was Gaffakin (this ine is a phonetic spelling).

All in all most of them would have been better off with a number.

Some great ones when I worked Offshore over here.
Richard Head (not best known in USA like w**ker, but to me hillarious) and had an idiot working on my crew for bout a week before I sent him home who called his son Blade Andrew (he liked the movie Blade, sheesh) and his surname was DuBleu (Cajun) so initials were BAD. That kid better be bigger than his dad or he will get a serious a**kicking for years at school lol.

Re stolen traffic signs: Since februari there is an offical ban on smoking pot in the streets in one particular neigbourhood in Amsterdam. Off course, diligent as we Dutchies are, a menacing red edged sign was developed and placed to warn the tourists.

As expected, the first and scond ones placed lasted less than 24h before being removed by souvenir hunters. After that some more were pinched, so the district council decided to respond by offering the signs up for sale for €90. Incredibly, more than 350 were ordered already. I live in a very weird country for sure

Not sure why I'm bothering but I'm new here so I have to start somewhere. I promise I'm not anal...just thorough(!)

Siobhan is the Gaelic form of Joan. Judith and Julia are variants. Gaelic is a language in its own right and therefore has no link to your proposed phoenetic spellings in English.

The marvel of the internet...http://www.ireland-information.com/heraldichall/irishgirlsnames.htm

An interesting one is "Menzies" pronounced "Ming". I can't remember going down to the "John Ming" newsagents and getting 20 Embassy, so I guess both pronouciations are valid.

Your spelling is interesting because the "Ch" being pronouced as "Sh" dirives from the influence of French. So in itself, your example is self-damning. I admit this is often difficult to avoid!

Oh...I have a BC-Rich Warlock NJ Series (circa 1997) fitted with a very special Warpig on the bridge and a DiMarzio Super Distortion on the Neck. I use a POD to a Power-Amp into a Marshall 4 x12 cab.
