Title: pickups for epiphone sg
Post by: Anch on July 30, 2013, 02:42:47 PM
Hello,

I'm new on the forum because I needed to ask one question. I will buy a new guitar soon which will be an epiphone sg g400 or g400-pro if I found one and even before buying it, I'm looking for new pickups. I already have an Epiphone Les Paul with a warpig set in tune B and now I'm looking for something more vintage to play stuff like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, etc. but I also want them to have good clean to reproduce a similar sound to starway to heaven. I don't mind if the pickups are two different one in the bridge and the neck. So which one you, guys, think will more fit for what I'm looking for.

With those models of Epiphone the pickup choices would be the same as for a Gibson SG, given the similar mahogany glued neck construction etc. I'm guessing that the consensus will be a Riff Raff in the bridge for your application, and either a Riff Raff or Mississippi Queen (humbucker size P90) in the neck position.

Stairway To Heaven was mostly recorded with a Tele IIRC. But anyway: you want the RiffRaff, without any doubt nor hesitation. Late (early 60s) PAFs repro so that's what you got on the first SGs, bright, punchy and focused, great jangly clean tones, and can stand quite a lot of gain (think metal chugga chugga gain). Don't bother looking for a different neck or bridge, get the whole set, they really are a perfect match.

I know that it was recorded with a tele I just want a similar sound in clean. Thanks for the answer, I also asked Tim what was his tought and he said the Riff Raff set was the best choice too. I was already looking at those and the mule set or a mix of both but it seems Riff Raff will give me the tone I need
