I like this kind of music, always have, and recently I've been checking out some newer bands who (I think) fall into the doom genre, broadly speaking (I'm never very comfortable with trying to pigeonhole music into all these genres and sub-genres, but they can be useful sometimes, I guess).

I very much prefer the more melodic, '70s-influenced, old-fashioned trad metal end of the spectrum.  I do like the really sludgy, grindy bands like Sleep as well, but I can only take them in small doses, to be honest.

Can't claim to be any kind of expert - the bands I like are probably only the better known ones and I'm probably just scr@ping the surface really.

Yea, I really don't like the doom tag. It gets used alot for bands that I wouldn't call doom. When I think of doom I think of the more 70s tinged stuff that usually has satanic imagery and lyrics along with it, the kinda stuff we briefly discussed in the what are you listening to thread.

Malleus in action :) Love their art!

I like my stoner/psychedelic rock. Really liked these guys when I caught them supporting Monster Magnet.

I can't really watch these YouTube clips on my sh!tty computer, which is a bit frustrating.  :(

Still, since it's all rather quiet and there's just a handful of us here, here's a question:

:?: Do you think actually being a stoner adds to (or maybe detracts from) the appreciation of this kind of music?  Or does it make no difference at all?  :?:

Obviously you may be unable to answer, I don't know your personal habits (for the record, I have never been stoned.... unless I inhaled more than I realised at those Hawkwind gigs in the late '70s)

I'm not a stoner, but I love stoner/psychedelic/space rock. I also like goth rock and am in no way gothically inclined :)

Really, really embarrassingly dumb question, but can you give examples of "goth rock" bands?

It just makes me think of the Cure and the Sisters of Mercy, but I have no idea if I'm thinking along the right lines or not.
Title: Re: We need a Stoner/Sludge/Doom thread here

Yeah, Fields of the Nephilim, etc. Stuff like that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CU55qip9G0A (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CU55qip9G0A)

All About Eve and The Cult are usually bundled up under the Gothic Rock banner also.

EDIT: just looked at genres in my iTunes library, quite a lot comes under the tag of gothic rock/metal in there: The Gathering, After Forever, Sentenced, PoisonBlack, For My Pain, ReVamp, 69 Eyes, Type-O Negative, Lacuna Coil, Evanesence, Paradise Lost and Tiamat in addition to those mentioned before (Sisters/Cult/All About Eve/FotN). Seems I have quite a lot of that!
Title: Re: We need a Stoner/Sludge/Doom thread here
Post by: Philly Q on August 03, 2013, 07:37:28 PM
Ah, thanks for that!   :D

I like some Type O and Paradise Lost stuff.  And I do like ReVamp, Evanescence (and We Are The Fallen) quite a lot, in fact I often like rock bands with female vocalists, although I'm not so keen on, for example, Lacuna Coil or Within Temptation.  I guess I'm confessing to liking the less "cred" bands there, but I simply like the melodies....

So maybe I'm a little into goth rock too.

I have fairly diverse tastes to be fair and I've got some far, FAR more embarrassing things in my CD collection than any you've mentioned ( which I have too :) ).

I don't reckon being high adds or takes anything away from it. Nobody I know who smokes listens to this sort of thing though (more into electronic stuff, especially the more ambient/laid back stuff), if that helps answer the question at all!
Title: Re: We need a Stoner/Sludge/Doom thread here
Post by: Lew on August 04, 2013, 11:13:22 PM
Never really thought about it. I guess it just goes with the territory in the same way that Doom bands slaughter goats for black magic and Death Metalers $%&# corpses. Well, except they actually are following through where as the former rarely are. From an appreciation point of view nothing is detracted from a sober listener but I would certainly imagine there's a resonance with those who do partake in such things ;) Bands like Weedeater, Bongzilla and Bongripper aren't exactly subtle about it. Keeps it out of the mainstream too.

Drop out of life with bong in hand Follow the Smoke toward the Riff filled Land
Proceeds the Weedian Nazareth.
The molten fire flowed up toward Zion
Flight of the Nazarene to seek the Cheribum
Rides out believer with the spliff aflame
Marijuana escapes earth to cultivate

Think that's a culture ting. I guess a yankee stoner is nothing like what we have.

Did you check out Jex Thoth?

I did, got the first album.  I've only listened once so far, I think it'll take a few more to get into it.  First impression was that I really like her voice, but not so sure there's anything particularly interesting about the rest of the band.... but maybe that'll change.

On the other hand I am really, really enjoying the Blood Ceremony albums, but to be fair I guess their music is much more "immediate".

I was also listening to a very, very bowel-looseningly doomy band called Windhand.  Not sure if I liked it or not....

I doubt that stoner bands smoke any more than some of the old school death metal bands like Autopsy.  Listen to Severed Survival and you *know* that was written with the assistance of weed, pizza, and cheesy old horror movies on VHS

I saw a bloke with hair like that the other day on my way to work.  He had a really big, square forehead too.

It actually crossed my mind to ask him if the Predator look was intentional, then I realised (a) he quite possibly wouldn't know what I was talking about; (b) he would probably beat me up.  :|

Has anyone mentioned Church of Misery? or Priestess?! Their record Hello Master was a banger.

Also, GU Medicine. They've split up and they're not really stoner or doom. Their record Saints of Excess is a banger.

Awesome. So many of my pedals have their artwork on them (as Malleus).

Yea, I think 2 members of UFOMAMMUT are in Malleus rock label thing. I'm not sure how that ties in with the actual art side but I think it does. Zolle are supporting and also on the label.

Sasquatch are awesome.

Checkout Albatross. And the Flaming Sideburns. Not really stoner but definately stoned rock and roll.

I happened across a band called Sleepy Sun the other day too. Their song Marina is a banger n'all.

Sorry for no YouTube linky, I'm at work.

Paddy.

Got that Fuzz album, it's good stuff. Making me want/need a decent fuzz pedal. I'm sensing a BYOC Large Beaver build kit incoming for my birthday..

I made a pedal that really nails that effect after getting into MSK (delay>phaser>reverb with a muff on the front for when you need it) as a kind of all round stoner/psyche box. Demo is choppy as f**k because I had no idea how to work the video editing software and it was more of a demo of the features of the pedal rather than anything else.

YOB have the next album mapped out. From FB.

Had an amazing YOB practice. The new songs are fully in focus. 2 mega DOOM bludeoners, one "faster" song, and the most beautiful arrangement we've ever written to close. 4 songs, 55 minutes.
