The Mules were shipped to Aus. yesterday.
Mmmm, Gold engraved covers on a wine red Tokai LC80 with the most ebony looking rosewood fret board I've ever seen.
But bugger the look, it's the sound that's got me drooling with anticipation.
I think I'm gonna have to get a Marshall combo or something "British" to do them justice.
Any suggestions for an amp to give me good 'ol classic rock sound? I should say I have a thing for low powered valve combos (I don't gig).
-
you have a thing for low powered valve combos meaning... you like them???
if thats the case lol then what about a laney lc15 or lc30???
-
cornford carrerra.
:D
haven't tried it, but the hellcat is pretty sweet- and you can change the power tube and pre amp tubes when it's on standby! :D
it's dear, though.

Burnt fingers all round then.....hotswappin valves doesn't do them much good, hot valves break easy!
The Groove Tubes single ended amp is quite nice, recently played a really nice sounding Cornell Rambler, it was loaded with a vintage 30 so it had a bit more of a british edge o the tone. Matamp (shamless plug) do some nice sounding amps too.
You could go Marshall but you'd be looking at at least 50w for a combo that had a half decent classic rock tone.
You'll love the mules btw!
One last thing - aren't we in the wrong area for gear talk???
-
MINIMAT! I'd love one for home usage.
-
id go for a small laney combo great british tone better then modern marshalls (personal opinion) also there really well priced!
-
REALLY need to know what ur budget is i think mate tbh
-
Thanks to all so far...........
Oops sorry re the wrong area post.
Anyhow I have a budget of up to $AUD3000 (1200 pounds?), not excactly boutique money but should give me a huge choice in a small combo. I like a nice clean sound as well.......
Are those Laney's known to be reliable?
I'm not overly concerned about the badge on the front being Vox/Marshall or anything else, just that it should be lower power with the British sound.
-
I've heard negative things about the quality of Laney amps, but having never owned one myself I can't say whether those comments are true. Laney do certainly seem to be selling more amps recently so they must be doing something right thought.
Are there any home-grown amp companies in Australia? It might be worth looking into it as you won't have to pay the cost of import duty on top. And if something goes wrong with it then you should get better support.

This guy makes the best sounding amps I've heard: Kingsley Amps (http://www.kingsleyamplifiers.com/). Kills BadCat amps, Orange, Marshall, etc. He's also friendly and responds well to emails.

Their more recent ones are of a MUCH higher quality than those built in the 80s so i've heard (never having tried a bad Laney :P )

You're not wrong, Tom.
Mules + Xotic RC Booster + Minimat = TOTAL SONIC NIRVANA

yeah, hayden- i think I read you're meant to leave it for a while on standby or something to let them cool down... (although that doesn't make sense, since the point of standby is to KEEP the valves warm... i'm confused now)
I'm not certain

Ive got a laney gh50l ive never had any problems with it and its built like a tank. The reviews are good on harmony central and ive seen 5 star reviews for laney amps in guitarist.
-

-
