Title: 2 very quick questions. help?
Post by: littleredguitars2 on August 30, 2013, 10:31:29 PM
just got my COVERED alnico nailbomb in today and i know typically the pole screws would be on the bottom for the bridge but ive seen some that arent... the writing on the back of the pickup makes me think the pole pieces should be on the top. the pickup thats in my guitar now has the writing on the back of the pickup upside down as well though so which way is which? ... so i'm not sure. and finally #2, i wrote down how the wiring was already in the guitar for the seymour duncan thats in it. do i essentially just switch the colors using this schematic between BK and SD (below) and it will be correct?

The conventional alignment of the bridge pickup is with the screw polepieces closest to the bridge, but there's no right or wrong.

And yes, just copy your existing wiring using the BKP colour coding instead of Duncan's.

Have fun!

Well, the screw polepieces are a little closer to the strings than the slug polepieces, because they're sticking out through the top of the cover, so the screw coil is probably a little "louder" than the slug coil.  Because of that, the pickup will probably sound brighter with the screws facing the bridge, and darker/warmer with the screws facing away from the bridge.  But it'll be a very subtle difference.

There's another factor which will affect this - most BKP humbuckers have an asymmetrical wind, with one coil wound a little hotter than the other so they "hear" different frequencies.  So again, turning the pickup round will affect the sound slightly.

You could just experiment and see if there's much difference, and which you prefer.

You think that's confusing ... I got really confused by the writing underneath my Warpigs ... which have allen bolts on both coils ... and had to check in with BKP to make sure that I was putting them in the right way (I was). I had to go by which coil had the wire coming from it.  In installed them the conventional way, but on one of them the writing seemed upside down.  I think this is probably the case with all of them, as the baseplates are set up for screw/slug, not which way the writing should go.
