Title: Is the Rebel Yell quite bright??

My guitar is the shop but there's till time to change my mind...  :P

I've been reading some of the stuff said about it and people seem to consider it bright with strong upper-mids, to be honest I was trying to get away from that as the Painkiller had that mid-peak. From the bass/mid/treble profiles there's no indication of this and the Holydiver has more of a mid thing going on.

I'm a bit confused, I might change my mind shortly - it's very tough as until you have something in your guitar you can never tell how it's going to sound.

I not know how it compares to the PK, what I can say is, yes it is bright, but not in trebly, thin or brittle way. There is the upper mid spike which gives it its very alive and rock voicing, treble is cutting but not shrill and the lows are not overbearing but there to fill it up with that low end punchyness (it is tight and not super low here, just has that body and punch, great for balance).
Sits super well in any not extremly bright axe.

Yes, it is most definitely quite bright, lots of upper mids, bright but not harsh treble, not very much bass.  It's quite a punchy, in-your-face, modern (not very modern, but not vintage) type of sound, IMO.

As far as I know, it sounds nothing like a Painkiller (although I have not tried the Painkiller, nor am I likely to).

Whether this is regarded as a good or bad thing will depend on your guitar, it generally seems to be regarded as best suited to Les Paul types.

Thanks for the responses - I have an Ibanez 7 string with a mahogany body if that's any help, although I've been told that's fine for this pickup.

I think that combi works fine. You can always tweak the height to set it for a more or less aggressive tone. The RY especially is sensitive for height.
